In the Driftless region of Wisconsin
The Baraboo Hills of South-Central Wisconsin
"It was so wonderful to be there, safe at home, sheltered from the winds and the cold. Laura thought that this might be a little like heaven, where the weary are at rest."
-Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Long Winter

CHARACTER INTRO - ROBIN HOOD/RIVER
The one, the only!
He’s chaotic, kind, furious, funny, and cursed with an outsized sense of justice. Robin Hood is supposed to be both joyful and vengeful, the ultimate trickster. 🎯
Also, he falls for Little John. Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, this book is gay!
DON'T GO GENTLY is a queer retelling of Robin Hood set in a near-future Madison, WI during societal collapse.
If you are desperate to read about a bisexual, camo-wearing, compound bow-wielding Robin Hood taking out “not-so-nice” agents in the beautiful Driftless region of the Great Lakes, well, me too, so hold my beer and watch me full send it.

I’ve said this and I’ll say it again, the driftless region is underutilized in horror. Everyone needs to stop talking about Midwestern gothic being all about cornfields and suburbs because where are the stories and posts about eeriness of the upper Mississippi? Finding strange things up in the buffs? The dying out prairies? The ancient things that could’ve survived the ice age here? Young adults who came here for college and can never leave? COME ON!
Day 31 - Landmark (Pulpit Rock)
What better way to finish off Inktober with a landmark local to me - Pulpit Rock in Decorah, Iowa, USA. (Not to be confused with the Pulpit Rock found in Norway.)
Decided to do the Inktober Challenge this month, doing my Simple Things drawings - which I haven't done in a few years!
Feels nice to do traditional ink drawings again.
At some point I'll upload these drawings as cards on my Etsy store.
Whitewater state park in southeast Minnesota was fantastic. I got to remember why I love the driftless region so much... not only was it among my very first “wilderness” experiences outside of cornfield hell, but it’s an undeniably beautiful region.
Got some really good strenuous hiking in, saw some killer views that were nigh impossible to capture with a phone camera, and did a little plein air watercolor. Also sitting beside the Whitewater River to paint gave me a nice sunburn. Minimal mosquitos though, so major plus. Plenty of birds and wildlife was regularly sighted or heard, so never a dull moment, either!
When I can’t access mountains to stare at, really picturesque wooded hills and rushing streams will do just fine. Views here were from chimney rock trail, inspiration point (and trail), and coyote point. And the whitewater river of course!
