My mom and I got drunk together tonight. We had a long conversation about what it means for me to be a lesbian, the significance this identity has to me, and how this will affect my life. For context, my mom is painfully supportive of me.
She brought up the power that a butch can hold in a relationship, especially when one (like myself) aims to be the breadwinner/"head of household", so to speak. She made me promise her to remain mindful of this power imbalance, and to make sure I'm always taking care of whatever girl I end up with in the future.
I think it's important for us butches to remember to be mindful. We are so lucky to be able to gain and hold the trust of the femmes who choose to allow us to take care of them. It's beautiful, and the balance must be respected. Just because you might make more money or hold more social status does not mean that your femme is lesser than. She is never decoration, she is never a trophy. Our femmes lift is up, complete us, and make us whole while ALSO being incredibly, strong, intelligent, and powerful beings separate of us. We wouldn't be the same without them, nor would they be without us. It's essential that we remain thankful of our femmes for everything they do for us.
I love femmes so much. And so does my mom, apparently.
