To be a Barista:

In light of the current situation and all the conservatives shouting #Boycottstarbucks, I am SO proud to be a barista! I remember back in 2015 when same-sex marriage was legalized and a whole bunch of companies suddenly supported gay marriage (including Starbucks). I had so many middle-aged white women who were mad, but bought their $6 drink anyway. In fact, I have a story that I still tell and laugh about.

Story time: Back in July 2015, right after same-sex marriage was legalized, I was working alone at my Safeway Starbucks kiosk. 

(Side note: the best part of this story is that Starbucks kiosks inside of Targets, Safeways, King Soopers, etc. aren’t even owned by Starbucks!! Those baristas are employed by and work for the store/company the kiosk is built in! That’s actually why I moved to a real Starbucks store and work there now. So much better!)

Anyway, a lady got to the counter with a line behind her. I greet her, but she stands there for a few seconds and then says, “Darn it, I forgot.”

I’m thinking she forgot her wallet or something, but I just want her to either order or leave because I am the only one in the kiosk and there are three, now four, people behind her.

“Forgot what?” I ask.

Then she says (and this is a direct quote, I will never forget it), “I forgot that I was supposed to boycott Starbucks because they support gay rights!”

I stand there for a few seconds in silence. All I can think about is how a the gayest barista is currently taking her order (spoiler alert, that’s me).

Then she shrugs her shoulders and slaps her giant fake-ass crocodile-skin purse down on the counter and says, “Oh well, I’m here now, I might as well get something.”

To this day, that is the funniest interaction I have had with a republican customer. I remember making her drink and thinking, “You don’t support Starbucks or gay rights? Boy would you be interested to know who is making your fucking latte.”
