Tech Spring Cleaning
Tech Spring Cleaning Tips from Drive Savers Spring is finally here! Time to sweep out the cobwebs and clean out the closets. But don't forget about your technology! Surge Protectors Often hidden under a desk or behind a filing cabinet, surge protectors are easily forgotten. These hidden workhorses are extremely important for your technology, especially since power surges are the #1 cause of data loss. These devices not only protect your electronic equipment, they protect everything stored on that equipment.
Check the indicators. Some surge protectors include a "surge" or "overload" indicator light. "Overload" means you've connected too many devices for the surge protector to handle. The "surge" indicator will flash during a power event showing that the surge protector is working properly. In some cases the "surge" indicator may remain on. If this is the case, you've experienced a surge powerful enough to damage the protector which should be replaced ASAP.
Keep surge protectors clean using a can of condensed air in addition to normal dusting. Dust and dirt could cause the device to heat up or malfunction.
Run a Full Virus Scan Do you use email? Ever search online? Of course you do. New viruses and malware come out all the time—each seemingly sneakier and more malicious than their predecessors. Now is a good time to run a full virus scan. Change Your Passwords It's a total pain, but think of it this way: Every time you type in your password, it's at risk of being stolen. Someone may be looking over your shoulder. You may be using WiFi, which has well-documented security weaknesses, and your password may be intercepted en route by a hacker. Once a password is stolen, it may be used to monitor your computer behavior or it could be collected with others, sold to organized criminals and used at a later date. Changing your passwords from time to time limits the amount of exposure your personal documents and information may have. Which is increasingly important as most of us now bank online, among other activities.
