Interactive Highway Code App Launched by the DSA
Transport secretary Justine Greening has marked the 81st year of the Highway Code by launching an interactive app set to launch one of Britain’s most iconic and longest running publications into the 21st century.
The app is intended to make the Highway Code both more accessible and more fun for road users of all generations. In particular it is hoped that it will appeal to the younger generations, by enabling them to access and keep up to date with the latest driving regulations quickly and conveniently at all times.
Since its introduction over seventy years ago, the content of the Highway Code has changed drastically, representing the evolution of driving regulations through the years. In the inaugural edition, drivers were encouraged to ‘beep’ their car horns when overtaking but to avoid using their mirrors!
The app is a natural progression for the Highway Code, following on from the well received free ebook released a couple of years ago, and its entry into the social media marketplace through Facebook and Twitter, both of which offer free updates to followers.
Justine Greening, the transport secretary, confirmed that: “With more and more of us using smartphones and other devices it’s vital that products like the Highway Code adapt to be as accessible as possible.”
She also went on to comment that: “With more and more of us using smartphones and other devices it’s vital that products like the Highway Code adapt to be as accessible as possible.”
The app not only contains the entire contents of the latest Highway Code, but also a number of interactive features, including interactive road sign tool & stopping distance tools, a search engine and a wealth of quizzes.
The app has been welcomed by road users and Highway Code aficionados alike, as well as experienced driving school instructors who believe that the app will increase awareness amongst learner drivers, resulting in improved driving knowledge and abilities.
