'A love affair with safety'
Michigan's law against texting while driving has been largely unenforceable because it says nothing about emailing, reading emails/texts, shopping on line, FaceTiming, etc.
How's a cop to know?
Now the state House has passed a package of bills that would expand the law to include pretty much ALL hand-held phone activity while driving.
Hallelujah! It doesn't take a traffic engineer to see that cell phone use by people at the wheel is a proliferating danger to everybody on the road.
Yet, not everybody sees it as a problem. For example, Rep. John Reilly, as quoted by MLive, criticized the proposal as more intervention by the “big hand of government."
“Unfortunately," Reilly said, "in our country, we have a love affair with safety. Liberty has an element of risk. You can’t have both.”
