it may be early, but the farmer's market was already busy with people bustling around. the tote bag that's over dana's shoulder is already weighed down with the goods that she has found along the way as she half peers back over her shoulder to check on mel. "how're you doing? finding everything that you're after?"

and if she's anything like dana, finding more than she had planned on too. however, the draw of a fresh punnet of strawberries will invariably draw her in even when she's already bought more than enough for the week. "thought we could grab a bite to eat as well. there's a nice place down there that does coffee."

dana's smile is kind as she wraps an arm around mel's shoulders, pulling her in for a brief squeeze from the side that only lasts a few seconds before she's releasing the resident. "you'll be fine, i promise. there'll be another charge nurse here. i promise they don't bite."

teasing aside, she rounds mel to be standing in front of her. she regards the resident, her expression minutely stern, if only to make sure the younger women took on what she said seriously. "you're good at what you do, mel. you're more than capable of doing it on your own whether i'm here or not. you don't need me to help you take care of it."

Despite Trinity's prickly demeanor, somehow Mel didn't ever really seem put off. The persistence was both surprising and admirable in equal measures. She felt bad for snapping at her, clearly her fuse remained as short as ever. But Mel's sweet, kicked puppy demeanor has her sighing. Damn it. "You were just trying to help," it's almost begrudging, but sincere nonetheless. "Don't worry about it."

does the joke land perfectly? maybe not, but bear still does smile. “well, i’m gonna go with three for now, but i’ll have to do some more research before I really choose a side.” his own tone is soft as honey, worried but in a way that feels so natural to him. “d’you want some ice? there’s a pretty good chance you’re gonna get a good sized bump back there.” and he should be insisting on ice, probably, but he has personally always hated the feeling. so it’s a question instead.

She’s a good kid, Dr. King. Good head on her shoulders. Maybe one of the better residents he’s had in his time. Cares deeply for the well being of others … which just so happens to be the source for his annoyance at the moment.

Robby straightens his posture, having been hunched over an unconscious patient — car accident. Minor injuries, for the most part, but the kid had hit his head on his car door pretty damn good. Hands grasp the ends of the stethoscope hanging around his neck, a closed mouth sigh breathed through his nose. “ You should know by now that these slow moments never last long. ” He expects some major trauma to come rushing through the doors at any moment. That’s just how things went around here. “ Come on — if it makes you feel any better … walk with me. Tell me about this lawsuit against you. ”

fondness  threatens  to  warm  the  apples  of  his  cheeks,  though  jack  does  not  give  into  the  trap  of  a  smile.  but  if  anyone  could  get  one  out  of  him,  it  would  be  melissa.  though  their  first  meeting  saw  him  trying  to  scoop  any  joy  out  of  young  dr.  king  with  an  excavator,  now,  he's  grown  rather  partial  to  her.  ❝  doesn't  suck,  ❞  jack  offers  nonchalantly,  with  a  shrug.  it  all  comes  with  age  and  experience,  he  thinks  to  himself,  but  that's  for  mel  to  figure  out  on  her  own.  an  index  finger  points  out  in  her  direction.  there  is  quite  the  lengthy  pause  before  jack  amends,  ❝  ━you're  cool,  dr.  king.  ❞  and  is  jack  abbot  not  the  king  of  cool  to  be  making  such  declarative  decisions?

in  conclusion;  ❝  ━that's  why  we  all  need  to  learn  to  garden,  sustain  our  own  plant  life.  ❞  why,  jack,  do  you  have  a  bunker  somewhere?  no,  but  he's  gotten  quotes.  anyways,  jack's  been  talking  to  mel  at  ❛  family  dinner  ❜  for  several  hours  now.  he's  pretty  sure  he's  seen  robby  rub  his  temples  at  least  ten  times  and  dana  has  refilled  her  wine  just  a  bit  less  frequently.  getting  melissa  and  jack  together  is  the  recipe  for  a  nonstop  gab  session  about  damn  near  nothing  the  other  dinner  guests  have  any  clue  about.  he  yaps,  she  yaps,  jack  nods,  jack  stares.  he's  enthralled  by  young  mel.  and  don't  even  let  them  start  telling  stories.  they're  on  the  same  frequency  that  way.  ❝  what've  you  been  reading  lately,  by  the  way,  dr.  king?  ❞  oh  no,  here  they  go  again.

"see the hatman right now? nah. no way. not enough benadryl for that. you have to take at least." A pause. He considers. "i'd say at least seventeen for him to pay a visit. i only took ten."

Bane spreads his arms, as if that's a completely normal thing to say and Dr. King just isn't getting it.

"and no. i mean, i have allergies. but i don't take the benadryl for that. they don't keep a registry of who's buying lots of benadryl like they do cold medicine, doc." He tips her a wink. "it's a legal high, my friend. noooo, no drawbacks."

He kicks his feet a little, trying to free them from under the hospital blanket.

"also not why i came in today. i had an asthma attack, someone called 911, i'm all better now. but they're holding me here for reasons beyond my control. something something... rapid heartbeat after the nebulizer..." Another brief pause, then he snaps his fingers, loudly. "typical side effect of the nebulizer, but combined with the high amount of diphenhydramine in my system probably caused the arrythmia in the ambulance. bam. diagnosis. can i leave?"
