15 !
character development questions
15. What kind of inner life do they have ā rich and imaginative? Calculating and practical? Full of doubts and fears? Does it find any sort of outlet in their lives?
OH BOY WELL ISNāT THAT PANDORAāS BOX.
Beat considers herself fairly practical, and thatās certainly true on a day to day basis. She also considers herself perfectly fearless, which is not. The biggest question mark in Beatās life is Fennyl - her comrade, elder brother figure, the only person she let herself get close to in her whole life. The man she pushed over the edge of Lorule and watched vanish into darkness.
See, falling over the edge in Lorule means certain death. Nobody knows whatās down there, because nobody thatās ever fallen has ever come back. Thus, Fennyl should be dead, right?
Beat is terrified that he is and terrified that he isnāt.
Sheās terrified that he isĀ because that mean she killed the only person that showed her unconditional kindness. The person that clothed her, taught her, protected her, showed her it was possible to have fun in bleak, bleak Lorule.
Sheās terrified that he isnātĀ because if he somehow survived, oh boy, he must hateĀ her. He must absolutely despiseĀ her. She pushed him off the edge of the world after everything heād done for her? After saving her ungrateful life? He didnāt have to do that, you know, he didnāt have to save her life and show her how to fight, to survive. If Fennyl is alive, thereās going to be hell to pay, and Beat knows sheās going to deserve every second of it.
But naturally, she has no outlet, because she doesnāt trust anyone to the length of confiding in them. Instead, she bottles it up, shoves it under the rug, and puts on a smile for all to see.
25 and 31?
character development questions
25. What do they need and want out of relationships, and how do they go about getting it?
Above all else, Beat looks for respect and equality in any relationship, regardless of it being platonic or romantic. She doesnāt like being looked down on and she doesnāt like being brushed off. She isnāt overly needy when it comes to relationships I guess? And sheās really bad at maintaining them properly; I can guarantee you that she could disappear for five or six days without a word to anyone because she doesnāt have that sort of realization that other people might value her as much as she doe them. (Abandonment issues whatcha gonna do.)
Ultimately, she shies away from most deeper relationships and treats most of hers fairly shallow. Sheās used to being the trash thrown out at the end of the day so she never goes into any relationship expecting it to last much longer than a few months before someone either moves on or tries to plant a knife in her back.
31. Is there anything that counts as a ādealbreakerā for them, positively or negatively? What makes things go smoothly, and what spoils an activity or ruins their day? Why?
Having to murder! No, really. Beat soured on the whole murder-people-for-a-living thing a while back. Sheāll still accept an assassination request if sheās desperate for money/food (itās not like her reputation disappeared when she did) but she wonāt like doing it. Any day where she can smile and go to sleep with a full belly is a good day by her standardsāthatās practically a luxury in Lorule anyway.
š Dainan awoke to someone rifling through his bag; and that someone had some of his bread. He stared at Beat for a second before speaking "... You could have just asked." (HENLO)
