Drones has always felt like a very raw album from Matt, especially knowing what has happening both for him at the time and where the world was at the time, both of which fed into its concept. From all of that, Mercy in particular has always felt like a very desperate cry out after the concepts protagonist comes to grips with everything happening within the system they were trapped in. That being said, while I get what it seems to be putting down, never has it felt more terrified and primal than it does listening to it now. The last chorus feels very poignant, like something someone would drop to their knees screaming in the face of fear and hate we have in front of us:
"Show me mercy from the powers that be
Show me mercy from the gutless and mean
Show me mercy from the killing machines
Show me mercy, can someone rescue me?"
As strong as i am trying to be as everything happens and as i try to tighten up with my community, deep down this really hits where I am feeling on the inside right now.
