Certainly enjoyed the Gatsby themed party “Drop it like F. Scott” in the gender-swapped He’s All That, but I think it’d be super fun to switch a physical altercation into a beading contest. Who can knot pearls fastest for their flapper gal / partner as they watch in awe?! Do you have some Greek mythology/classics suggestions?

I smiled really big at the words “Greek mythology” and immediately rushed to answer this.

For the mythology class I took, we read The Anthology of Classical Mythology which I found to be really enjoyable, and also super interesting (from that, I would specifically recommend The Works and Days and the Theogony. I just found them both to be really entertaining). If you haven’t read Sophocle’s Theban cycle (i.e., Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonnus, and Antigone), you totally should. Antigone is basically my favorite ever. I also really like this collection of fairy tales and folklore. 

I feel like we might have talked about Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis at one point? If not, and you haven’t read it, you really should. It is my absolute favorite take on mythology (and the Cupid & Psyche myth is one of my favorites)!

I can’t give a full recommendation because I haven’t read all of it, but we translated parts of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Latin last semester, and I really liked the parts we translated. So if you haven’t read that, you totally should (and then let me know what you think! Okay, you should let me know what you think of all of these—especially Till We Have Faces. I love hearing your opinions…which I think I’ve said before, but it bears repeating.)

Even so, I think I'm going to try to finish it. My lit. professor lent it to me, and he likes it--so maybe if I keep reading I'll see why. I just feel bad for not reading something he thought I'd like. If I read 27 pages a day I can finish it before I see him again, and I think I can handle that, while I'm reading other things, as well.

Oh, yeah. I understand that. One of my favorite teachers suggested a book, and it doesn’t sound like something I’d really enjoy, but I’m definitely going to try it because I respect her opinions so much. Anyway, tell me what you ultimately think of it! I’d been planning on reading it at some point.

How do you feel about not finishing certain books? I just quit A Confederacy of Dunces after about fifty pages. I feel like there are better books I could spend my time on.

This is such a well-timed question! I just started reading one of Cornelia Funke’s newer books because she was one of my favorite authors in middle school, but I really just can’t get into it, so I’ve been debating whether or not I want to try to finish it. I think you’re right though…it seems pointless to force yourself to finish a book that you’re not enjoying when there are so many others to read that you would enjoy.

Did you like Middlemarch?

I did like Middlemarch! Honestly, the first time I read it, I was kind of frustrated with both Dorothea and the ending (I think partly because it wasn’t necessarily what I was expecting, and I’d never read anything by George Eliot before). But the second time through, I really enjoyed it. I actually think that knowing more about Eliot as a person helped me appreciate it more.

I borrowed a book from my boyfriend this summer and I still haven't started it
