BnHA just continues making me Real Fucking Nervous with every time Fuyumi pushes for Happy Family Feels and forced family dinners and every time Endeavor talks about redeeming himself like no.
And also, for fuck’s sake, the anime needs to stop replaying the scenes of child abuse over and over and over again every time Endeavor comes up, it’s not just annoyingly repetitive it is also uncomfortable to watch and very confusing from a narrative standpoint.
I mean, seriously, on the one hand they have sis pushing for the family to forgive Endeavor and have now even Deku suggest that Shouto might be considering the whole forgiveness thing and trying to like genuinely show Endeavor trying to do better... but then just throwing it all out the window again by showing clips of “and here’s why the family should have a restraining order against this man and he actually should never be allowed to interact with his children again”, like I am so confused about where the show wants to go with this.
Does the narrative want him to be forgiven and taken back by his children, or does the narrative keep reminding us of what an abusive piece of shit he was to drive home just why he definitely won’t be taken back?
Usually, at least the narrative given is clear. “Sure, this character is a piece of shit who mistreated others but I, the writer, like this character and have been pretty clear about that in the past so obviously they’re going to be redeemed and embraced by the very people they hurt” versus “Yeah, no, this person did bad shit to this other person and we’re super not going to hug this out, as I, the writer, have laid out in the way the other person’s arc has been going”.
But this one, this one, is so all over the place in its narrative and while that can indicate conflicting feelings and be used to show a complex situation, in this case it just feels like a mess that also has me incredibly nervous about where it’s gonna land on the long run.
I know this is an old joke and many people hate Jontron now, but this was my reaction the moment I tried to pick this series again and then lost me.
