November 19, 2010 - VI
Aside from seeing one band at LaGrange during the Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcase Show, I'd never actually been to the venue. But after being there for a long period of time tonight I really liked the place. It provides an intimate atmosphere to see bands. Oh, and apparently if you get there before 9 o'clock they don't charge a cover. So I got to see this incredible show fo' FREE!!!!
A little before 9:30 the music got started with the Austin band, These Mad Dogs of Glory. They had a bit of a Country music sound to them, due greatly to the steel guitar. Plus their singer had a voice that sounded like it sorta belonged to that genre. It seemed like they played quite a while, for an opening band. Somewhere around 45 minutes I would guess. They were really good though, and I liked them much more that I thought I was going too, based on their rougher sounding recordings on Myspace.
Next up, all the way from Atlanta, Georgia, was the rock trio, Dropsonic. They're in the midst (or I guess actually the end) of a little Mid-West tour supporting their newest record, VI, since it's their sixth album. I'd only recently gotten into the band, and had heard great things about their live shows, so I was eager to see what they were like. And man, it was a full on, rock your face off, rock show! Tey opened with a song from their new record, "Shortchanged", which seemed to be a great way to get the show started, as they amassed the most people in front of the stage out of any of the bands that played this night. Their set lasted about 46 minutes, which let them belt out 10 original songs, with the only others I was familiar with being "Losing Streak" and the title track from their last record "Low Life". Which singer/guitarist Dan Dixon joked about before playing it, "So we're gonna do a song from our last record that y'all will like. Or maybe y'all won't. But we're going to play it anyway." They even at one point apologized for being off, saying they were up most of the night partying after a show in Kansas, then they had to drive to Texas for this show. Even their merch guy apologized for them, saying they weren't near as good as usual. And if that's them sub par, I can't even fathom what they must be like at 100%. Every singer I've seen who also plays a guitar is good, but they have to be so focused on singing they don't come across as being incredible guitarists. But after tonight, Dan Dixon is the only exception to that, that I've seen. Even while singing he would shred on his ax, and when it came to some instrumental bridges in certain songs, well, he might have been one of the best guitarists I ever seen. And just about the same can be said for the rhythm section, bassist, David Chase, and drummer, Brian Hunter. These guys would be a tough act to follow. And frankly, tonight, no one did.
Up next it got back to the local Texas talent, with the Dead Twins. It'd been a few months since I saw them last, in which time the set has changed just a bit. They'd kept one old song in play, which last I'd seen them that was "Empire". But it's apparently now fallen to the song they opened with, "Deja Vu". I'd totally forgotten about that song, seeing as I only heard it once before, back when it was just the Cardinale brothers in the band. And now knowing that they'll be rotating songs out, I'm hoping one day "Buried" will make it's return. They took on some songs from their latest release next, with "Checkmate" "The Hanger" "I Am the Vector" and "Action/Reaction". Somewhere in between those songs Gabe, who was sporting a moustache, mentioned this month was dedicated to raising awareness to testicular cancer. And the before was "...Fuck a guy with a moustache day. So thanks to everyone who participated in that." he said. Then bassist Justin said "Yeah, I did. I was happy to bring awareness to it." They did a few more songs "Good Dope", "Darker Than Night", which Justin said was about Gabe's shirt. "Yeah." he replied "Or Patrick's night last night." as drummer, Patrick, just started shaking his head. They thanked everyone and encouraged everyone to buy some Dropsonic merch, so it lead me to believe that "Sick Again" was going to be the final song. But afterwards they started their instrumental piece. It was a pretty good show, I'd say the best I've seen them do. And it shouldn't be long before they get back to the top of their game.
Finally finishing out the night was THe BAcksliders. I'd seen them back at the presentation of the Observer's Music Awards back in July, when they did a mash-up with RTB2. But's it's hard to gauge a band on two songs. But by the time there nearly hour long set was up I was about as taken with them as I was with Dropsonic. Their music has an older sound to it, some of the songs sound like something that would've fit better in the 60's or 70's than now. But that also helps set them apart from most other acts. And then throw in front women, Kim Bonner's voice, which sounds like she smokes at least a couple packs a day. That's meant as a sincere compliment, cause her voice sounds incredible. The majority of songs they did came off their "Thank You" record, which can be downloaded for FREE via their website. Those songs are definitely my favorite of theirs, such as "Last Call" and "Maybellene Don't", but some of their (I'm guessing) past songs were pretty good as well. And their cover of "Keep A Knockin'", which they opened with, is great. With Kim singing the first verse, and Chris Bonner the second, as well as adding some backing vocals (for this song as well as about every other one.) They put on a great set, in terms of songs, but I just didn't feel it in their performance. But it turns out it was just an off night for them.
