Drosanthemum. South Africa, 2025
Drosanthemum speciosum
"Speciosum" means showy, and it would be hard to argue with that! Like Drosanthemum micans, D, speciosum comes from the winter-rainfall zone in the southwestern corner of South Africa.

Drosanthemum micans
For sheer flower-power, it is hard to beat a Drosanthemum, so I will close with a couple of species from northeast of Cape Town, in South Africa's winter-rainfall zone. This one is Drosanthemum micans, with stunning red-and-yellow flowers. Drosanthemum belongs to the Aizoaceae, or Ice Plant Fmily.

Drosanthemum micans
Drosanthemum is a genus of about 60 species in the Ice Plant Family (Aizoaceae), most of them found in the winter-rainfall area in western South Africa. They are often very enthusiastic flowerers, as can be seen here - the plant itself completely hidden by its flowers. The vivid red and yellow of the flowers makes for a very festive spring display. D. micans is native to the Robertson Karoo, a relatively dry region to the east of Cape Town.

Drosanthemum micans
Drosanthemum is a large genus in the Ice Plant Family native to southern Africa. Some species occur in the winter-rainfall region in the west, while others come from farther east where the rain comes mostly in summer. Drosanthemum micans is one of the winter-rainfall species, coming from near Worcester, South Africa, a little northeast of Cape Town. It is a small shrub, but it makes an outsize impact when its striking red-and-yellow flowers open.
