"Do you think we're nemesisis on every universe?"
"Theoretically no, and it's 'nemesis' by the way"
ROBIN’S INTRO COMIC HAS FINALLY BEEN FINISHED AND POSTED!!
READ IT HERE :D
im so happy with how it turned out!! i’ve learned so much making this comic and im really glad it’s finally out in the world for people to see. i hope you like it!
also, feel free to drop an ask in the inbox! characters currently open for asks are Voidball and (surprise!) Robin! i’m sure you’ll get some very interesting responses from the latter… ;3
A bit from the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels AU for WIP Wednesday!
Ed grins. “I was just going to suggest it.” He cocks his head to one side. “How about a deal – I’ll teach you how to keep yourself afloat and out of jail, and you teach me about how to pass myself off as old money?”
The idea that there’s anything Ed can learn from him hits Stede like a two-by-four, and then he’s smacked again at the idea that Ed will really teach him what he knows about grifting. It’s amazing. It’s the kind of opportunity someone in that sad little life he left behind would never get.
“Oh my god, yes, brilliant,” he says, taking the hand Ed offers. They shake on it, and he starts to feel wobbly. Ed seems a bit wobbly too, and they both look back out to sea. “Whoa,” he says softly, and Ed makes a noise in the back of his throat that seems to be in agreement.
TW: gore/unsettling imagery
[Signal received. Robin is now aware of the Ask Box available for asks!]
sooo i think its been long enough that i can finally talk about what i mentioned at the end of this post! yay!
as i said before, finding fonts for the characters to speak in for Robin's intro comic was suuuper fun because i have a minor hyperfixation in fonts and typefaces (ive even made a handful of my own lol).
on top of choosing a font for Robin and Voidball for the comic, i also got to choose a font for...
lets call him "Overwrite" for now
he is by far the character i went through the MOST fonts for because it was really important that his font convey both the proper tone and context. i really needed to find one that fit him and his situation.
at first, i wanted him to have a font in a similar handwritten style to Robin because they are both the "protagonists" of their respective worlds. but to keep Robin unique and highlight the slight differences between them, i didnt want to reuse the same font i'd given Robin.
so i went digging. in the running for Overwrite's fonts were the following:
however, once i applied them to the pages, i realized there was a problem: they didn't fit the tone of the scene. none of the handwritten ones i tried did.
simply put and without giving too much away: the handwritten fonts were far too clean and lively, both things which Overwrite is not.
then it hit me: perhaps i'm looking in the wrong place. instead of a mirror to the protagonist, maybe he should mirror the style of his counterpart: Voidball.
so i went looking for video game pixel fonts. the top 2 in the running at that point were Pokemon Classic by TheLouster115 and the Minecraft font, the latter of which made it pretty far into the creative process before i ultimately decided to scrap it.
the thing is, both of these fonts are strong in their own right, but neither necessarily fit Overwrite. this time instead of having too much personality, they had too little, and what personality they did have was instantly recognizable in a way that was VERY distracting (i.e. if you read his dialog the first thing your brain would do is go "hey! that's the Minecraft/Gen 2 Pokemon font!" which is not what i wanted lol)
so i went back to the drawing board again, this time equipped with a much clearer idea of what i wanted: a font that was stripped of notable personality and visibly fractured.
i went through the MOST fonts with this iteration. so many that i didn’t even bother downloading all of them. it was quite literally just several hours of clicking through pages on DaFont, saving potential matches in new tabs and comparing all of them to each other.
the problem i ended up having was that a lot of the fonts were either too popular/already recognizable or UNBEARABLY difficult to read. finding one that had what i was looking for on TOP of being legible was a Herculean task, i'll tell ya that much.
after much deliberation, i ultimately settled on the font you see in the final version of the comic: Glass Houses by Digital Graphic Labs
now i know what you may be thinking: if readability was a priority, why would you pick this one?
well simply put: its letters were all mostly intact and still reliably uniform enough to pass as normal at a glance, but are undeniably corrupted on closer inspection. sound familiar?
GH not only fits the character and atmosphere, but it elevates its surroundings and tells you a decent amount about the character without any extra writing or drawing. isn't that cool? :D
i have a WHOLE other rant on the design process for Overwrite himself, but i'll save it for another post. for now, enjoy the crumbs of ~lore~ in this post lol
animation test thingy i did for voidball!!
the static on their face is constantly dripping, but the droplets always disappear before they hit the ground. one can only wonder what lies beneath...
