“Again?!! You know running in the halls is unlawful on school grounds!!”
“Yeah, yeah..you’re sounding like a broken record now.” Chuckling, you turned around to see the red-eyed hall monitor frowning at you, his arms crossed.
Even with his status as the “Ultimate Moral Compass”, you weren’t intimidated one bit. He only scolded you and let you off the hook with several warnings, so you weren’t even phased by his harsh glares and booming voice.
Meanwhile, your fellow classmates would quiver at the mere mention of him--except for Mondo and Leon, who often joined you in delinquent acts.
This time, though, you were facing Ishimaru on your own.
“Oh, do I now?” He raised an eyebrow. “I give you so many chances to change your behavior! To do something better with yourself! But it seems you leave me with no choice.”
“Ooooooo how threatening~” You teased. “Why don’t you shave those eyebrows sometime? Maybe then I’ll actually listen to your warnings instead of being distracted by them-”
“Okay THAT’S IT! Detention for you!!” Ishimaru was already red in the face--in sheer embarrassment and outrage--as he grabbed your elbow and began hauling you off to the detention room.
“No wait!” You tried to break free, regretting what you said. “I-I’m sorry!”
“If you were sorry you wouldn’t have insulted my looks!!” He retorted. Even though he wasn’t looking directly at you, you could hear his voice get....choked up?
Damn...maybe you went too far.
It wasn’t like you to say such things to begin with.
“No, I-I mean it....I’m sorry. I had no reason to say that..”
Hearing your voice grow the softest he’s ever heard it, Ishimaru stopped in his tracks and glanced back at you, surprised. “Do you really or...are you just trying to get out of trouble again?” He asked, suspicious.
“....look, I know I can be a pain in the a---rear, sometimes but...” You managed to pull your arm out of his grasp. “You wanna know the truth about why I act like this?”
He was silent, before glancing around to see if anyone was nearby. Then he looked back to you and nodded.
You both went into an empty classroom, where you sat down and finally explained some more things about yourself:
The truth was...you never found out where you exactly belonged. You were never the most confident in yourself, nor did you have the highest self-esteem. But being punk gave you some sort of identity and...it made you feel good even though it was wrong for you to start breaking rules and intentionally piss off Ishimaru.
Even other delinquents like Leon and Mondo weren't as bad as he believed them to be. They often came to you for advice--whether about girls or the next exam--which you were always happy to assist them with.
Yeah they occasionally were rule-breakers like you, but they weren't the worst students.
When you brought them up, Ishimaru couldn't help but feel guilty for the times he scolded you for hanging around "bad influences". He knows their grades went up--the four of you shared almost all the same classes--but never realized it was because of you.
Heck...he started feeling guilt for all the times he was so harsh with you. Period.
So when you were done speaking, he was quiet for a good while. Then he bowed his head. "I.....I'm sorry. I horribly misjudged you as this...out-of-control troublemaker, when you're actually just the kindest person at heart."
You sighed. "It's okay, Ishi."
"No, you don't understand." He looked up at you, his red eyes no longer having that furious flare. "I know how it feels to struggle with...one's self-esteem. I get so caught up in my studies that...I-I can't even socialize properly. Or keep friends for long.."
His voice wavered again, and you could see him tearing up. ‘Wow, who knew this hardass hall monitor could be an actual softie?’ You mused.
"Hey now, don't cry." You patted his shoulder comfortingly. "You're okay, dude. Maybe I could be your friend?"
You were half-expecting him to yell at you for touching him. But instead he gave you this dumbfounded look. "Y-You....wanna be my friend?" He mumbled in shock. "Even after I've treated you so harshly-?"
"It's fine now, I'm over it." You chuckled. "I'm glad we can both relate in some way. You know imma still make some trouble just to get on your nerves."
Ishimaru couldn't help but smile a little, feeling more relaxed now. "Very well. Just don't go vandalizing school property."
