Researchers have mined one of the largest collections of medical records for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to hunt for existing drugs that might help patients live longer. The team, led by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, analyzed health data from over 11,000 U.S. military veterans diagnosed with ALS between 2009 and 2019. Using artificial intelligence combined with rigorous statistical methods designed to mimic controlled experiments, the scientists evaluated 162 different medications. They identified 27 drugs already approved for other conditions that showed statistically significant associations with survival changes in ALS patients. The research arrives as traditional drug development for ALS faces setbacks, including the recent withdrawal of the treatment Relyvrio after it failed to prove effective in larger trials. Because ALS became a service-connected disease for veterans in 2009, the Veterans Health Administration built an unusually detailed decade-long treatment record, creating a unique opportunity for this kind of analysis. The work, published in The Lancet Digital Health and conducted with Stanford, VA Palo Alto, and UCLA, offers a new pathway for finding treatments by repurposing medications already sitting on pharmacy shelves.
