Just for Fun: My Favorite Bama Beers
Here's a quick post, just for the hell of it. Alabama's got a long way to go to catch up with other states as far as our local brews go, but that don't mean my home state doesn't produce some damn fine beer already. Here are a few of my favorites:
Good People Snake Handler (Double IPA) (Birimingham): Probably the first double IPA that ever made me say "Wow" - and still probably my favorite DIPA overall. It's just everything that the style should be - bursting with fruity, citrusy hop flavor, but with a creamy body and plenty of malt backbone to back it up. The flavor is seriously powerful, but it's so well balanced that it just works. Available on draft, and very occasionally canned. 9.3%
Trim Tab Pillar to Post Rye Brown - Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Aged (Birmingham): Regular ol' Pillar to Post is a solid brown ale, but this barrel-aged version was a unique treat. It's the only one out of many, many bourbon-barrel beers I've had that literally tasted like bourbon-flavored beer. That's it. Oak, vanilla, etc. - it's like you watered down bourbon to 6% alcohol, but kept all the flavor. And I love bourbon, so for me that's awesome. Sadly, this was a super-limited batch. 6.1%
Druid City Riverside Saison (Tuscaloosa): I haven't had this since I first tried it at J. Clyde in March, but I remember loving it then. Super fruity, pleasantly spicy and yeasty. Nothing revolutionary or unusual - it's just everything I want in a saison. Lucky for me, my apartment in Tuscaloosa (which I move to this Friday) is within walking distance of the Druid City taproom. Woohoo! 8.5% (Just looked that ABV up. Would *not* have guessed it was that strong.)
