Chibi DRV3 Merch Stuff

Just because the last Danganronpa spinoff came out in 2021 and the last mainline entry came out in 2017, that doesn't mean we aren't still getting new Danganronpa stuff in 2024. Because Animate just CAN'T STOP producing new Danganronpa merchandise for some (wonderful) reason! They JUST posted those damn tea sets, and they're already back for more.

The latest things up for pre-order are a slew of chibi-style V3 character pieces; 25 total pre-orders are now up, in fact. These include plushies, acryllic stands, badges, stickers, charms, and some kind of character-on-a-stick thing called a "photo prop."

As is now typical, I first learned of this from Siliconera; I am grateful that they consistently report on all the new DR merch.

Kaede:

“Oh! They fell asleep. Aww, so cute! Their face looks so peaceful while asleep, I shouldn’t disturb them. Alright then, I’ll just listen to some 4 impromptus, Op. 90, D. 899, no. 3 in B flat major…”

Rantaro:

“Oh, would you look at that? They're sound asleep. I must be some soft cushioning, haha. Why would they be comfortable with someone like me, I wonder… oh well, I’ll just enjoy the moment…”

Kokichi:

“Wow! They fell fast asleep. Haha, I am the ultimate supreme leader after all! No wonder they would, especially someone like me. (Sigh), I guess it can’t be helped. Nighty- nighty, S/O~”

Kaito:

Maki:

“You’ve got to be kidding me… ugh, I guess I could live with it. Their face is so stupid when their asleep. But it’s pretty cute.. I- is this how you cuddle?? Ahhhh, I don’t know what to do..”

Tsumugi:

“Ooo! They fell asleep on me just like [insert anime title]! Aw, I can’t move or else they’ll wake up. Wait- do I have to kiss them?? Maybe just a peck on the cheek… I'M SO NERVOUS!!”

Himiko:

“Nyeh? Did they fall asleep?.. ahh, I guess it can’t be helped. They should be lucky I’m not just a mage, but a comfy mage. I’m feeling a little sleepy, too. Did they put a sleeping curse on me?”

Tenko:

“OH MY GOD THEY FELL ASLEEP ON ME!! T-they look so c-cute, I d-don’t know what to do! The relaxed face they have… the calming way they breath.. AHHHH! HELP ME!”

Angie:

“Yah- hah! They’ve fallen asleep! Atua must've blessed them with beauteous sleep, and that’s why they look so angelic in my arms. If they’ve fallen asleep, I shall too!”

Korekiyo:

“Hmm.. it would appear they’ve fallen asleep… perhaps I should rest along with them while they are on me. Yes, I will. To move them would be rude and unnecessary. Sweet dreams..”

Ryoma:

“Huh? Oh, they’re asleep. That’s funny; getting close and comfy with someone like me. Heh- what a weird kid. Well, I can’t let them off or they’ll get sad. I’m a bad guy, but…”

Kirumi:

“They requested that they lay asleep on me for a while. I do not know what they mean when they said “a while”, but I do not hope soon. Being relaxed is good for them…”

Gonta:

“Oh! S/O fell asleep on Gonta! Aw, they look cute when they sleep! Are they having good dreams? Gonta hopes so. If not, fighting the bad dream is what Gonta will do! Like true gentleman!”

Miu:

“AHHHH! T-THEY FELL ASLEEP ON ME!! Ok, stay calm, d-don’t wake them up. Heh, makes s-sense they would fall a-asleep on someone as great as moi! Wait- ARE THEY NUZZLING INTO MY TITS!?-“

“It’s a good thing I thought of getting them a pillow. I really am a genius! Still, it’s a little embarrassing to have them cuddle up to me… BUT ITS FINE! T-this is just what every couple does!”

General Appearance Comparison

-Biggest difference is probably the candles. They’re considerably brighter (and more orangey) in the flashback light version, and may even be larger in size as well.

-The lighting is different in general—not just the brightness, but the tone and saturation as well.

-Kaede’s portrait has a solid blue background in the Ch2 version, but in the flashback light version it has a white reflective stripe

-The scene’s background color is different, though this could be due to the change in lighting.

-Shouldn’t Shuichi be wearing his hat? Like he is in every other flashback?

-In the version shown at the start of Ch2, Kaede’s name, “赤松楓” is clearly visible, but the others are too blurry to read clearly. It looks like the one to her right might say Amami, 天海, but I can’t tell for sure. In the flashback light version, no close up shots are shown so all names are indiscernible.

So... What’s the deal here? I could excuse changing the lighting a bit to show the other students’ portraits more clearly, but then... Even with the lighting change, what’s up with the change in candles? Why is Kaede’s portrait background different?

Come to think of it, why are we even shown two versions of this scene to begin with? It really didn’t do much narratively.

Could one version of this scene be real while the other is some sort of... replication or something?
