Throwback Thursday Review: 1999 by Prince (1982)

Duff McKagan’s Necessary Albums Review #34

I am not going to lie. I went into this album thinking I was going to have a great time bopping along. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. It just wasn’t the joyous, smooth, Prince stuff that I know. The title track sounded awkward in its rhythm, and “Lady Cab Driver” features lyrics that are creepy and feel toxic. There are great songs, but the album is more scattered than I would have expected. Since this was the album before Purple Rain, I think this was more of a stepping stone towards greatness. It on the edge of glory, but not quite there.
