Que les Jeux Olympiques commencent!

Part 1: The Opening ceremony

Summary: The poleis of Greece arrive for the 17th ancient Olympic Games held in Athens and take their oaths.

Warnings: mentions of war, some minor things are inspired by The Hunger Games (as it can be seen in some of the next parts too), the speeches were heavily inspired by the 2024 Paris Olympics opening speech, me making hardly any sence

Author's Note: This is the first of seven parts in a little sideproject of mine. The parts are loosely connected to each other (kind of like interconnected standalones are) but the story has an arc to it (at least I would like to think lol). Hopefully it's not too bad. Also a little side note: poleis is plural for polis, which is an ancient Greek city-state. Gif is from google.

Drums roll as the delegations of the poleis march in, into a half-circle, each contingent representing their polis carrying their banner. A Herald steps forward to speak.

Herald: People of Greece! Athens, Spartans, Thebans, Corinthians, Miletusians - all noble city-states - welcome! Tributes, we salute your courage and steadiness. You have travelled from far and wide to gather here, in the shadow of Olympos, to honor the gods, to test your strength, and to celebrate peace among nations.

High Priestess: On this day, on this sacred ground, consecrated by the gods above, we pause our wars for good, celebrate friendship and compare our strength. A great symbol of this event is the Olympic Flame, which has been lit by the high priestess Püthia in the temple of Hera. This token bears great importance in our history, so it shall be present on this day too.

Herald: Let the torch bearer bring forth the flame forged by the gods!

Drums start to play dramatically again.

A runner hurries in with a torch in his hand carrying the Olympic Flame that has been lit by the high priestess Püthia in the temple of Hera previously. The runner hands the torch over to the herald.

High Priestess: This little light has been bestowed upon us by the grace of the gods. Let’s cherish it with all our might. And with that, we shall make an oath to the chief god Zeus to bless our contestants with fairness and luck throughout their competitions. May this light guide all who compete beneath the gaze of Zeus. Now say together: May the light of the game gifted to us by the gods guide us on our journey to victory and fame. And may fairness accompany every competitor along this path.

Everyone repeats the last sentences, making it their oath.

Athletes: In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our poleis.

Herald: The Olympic flame will make Athens and all of Greece shine even brighter. With this flame that the gods blessed us with, I hereby sanctify these games and wish that the best may win, but that all of us may remain blessed.

With that, the high priestess joins the side of the herald and together the two lift up high the torch ceremoniously, then bring it down so the content of the cauldron catches on fire.

High Priestess: In the light of the sacred fire, oh Zeus the almighty, let us find not war but glory, for we have suffered many of that already.

Herald: Let it be given, that for seven days and for seven nights, the world would stand still - and peace would reign in the name of the gods.

People start clapping, some chanting “Let it be!”, then everyone quiets down.

Herald: And now let me hand over the floor to the judge of the Games, Hellatodikai, to make his ceremonial speech.

The judge steps forward to speak.

Judge: Welcome to the best athletes of the world - welcome, Olympians! This is the pinnacle of your athletic journey. You have come here as athletes. Now you are Olympians. We stand on this ground today, with shared spirits, because we believe that to be inspired with the joy that only sport can give us, is freedom. We do not only respect each other, we live in solidarity with each other. In a world torn apart by wars and conflicts, it is thanks to this solidarity that we can all come together tonight, uniting the athletes from the territories of all poleis. Now we are part of an event that unites the world in peace. As the Herald and the High Priestess said before me: Let us celebrate this Olympic spirit of living life in peace, as the one and only humankind united in all our diversity.

Everyone claps in agreement.

Judge: As the judge of the Olympic Games, I hereby declare open the Games of the 17th Central European Jemboree Olympiad. Let the Olympic Games begin!
