It is important to transition to an alumnae chapter because there you are able to maintain the solidarity and fellowship of the sisterhood at a different level. Visit different chapters to find the perfect fit for yourself. Pay your dues yearly becasue it will keep you in the know of what is going on with your chapter and with the sorority overall. NMAC serviced the area of Manhattan in which I lived and I connected well with the body of sorors affiliated with this alumnae chapter. Many of my sands became members of NMAC. It is important to transition to an alumnae chapter to continue the work that we started in college. Moreover, we all join the sorority to do the work of Delta and that doesn't end once we graduate from our collegiate chapters. One piece of advice that I would share is to truly shop around when choosing an alumnae chapter. It is important to know what the alumnae chapter stands for before joining. I chose to join NMAC after visiting, and truly felt the warmth and love of sorors. I like the work that NMAC does within North Manhattan, [considering] the history of the chapter and how long it has been in existence. NMAC has been doing wonderful things in Manhattan for years. Since NMAC’s chartering, it has been heavily involved in the community and I admired its dedication to the work of Delta. While you are born into Delta through your collegiate chapter, you are raised in an alumnae chapter. It is important to mature in Delta in the same way you mature in life. Exposure to and collaboration with members of all ages, backgrounds and chapters of initiation are critical to developing a stronger sense of community within Delta. You have the unique opportunity and distinction of experiencing Delta at the collegiate level as our Founders did, but also carrying the torch for life on the alumnae level as our Founders envisioned. Just as importantly, alumnae chapters need the enthusiasm, ideas, leadership, energy, work ethic and love of our younger members. We are better and more relevant with the involvement and support of our young Deltas. I implore you to learn, serve, lead, grow and love. It's important to fulfill your commitment to sisterhood, scholarship and service and to experience the full breadth of what the Sorority has to offer. Before joining a chapter, do your research. Get to know the various chapters in your community to determine which is the best fit for you. To make a successful transition, you should look for initiatives and personalities that align with your style and passions, to ensure you are optimizing your talents while doing the work of Delta. After I moved to New York, I was part of another chapter that had a larger membership than what I was used to coming from a very small and close-knit chapter. As I got involved in various organizations in the city, I met more and more NMAC sorors who reminded me of that special bond my collegiate chapter members and I had, and who were doing the type of programming that I had a natural interest in. That's what drew me to NMAC and it's been a great experience serving alongside like-minded women who truly get me and are open to exploring innovative ways to tackle societal issues. Delta is a lifetime commitment. An object in motion is easier to keep in motion, and transitioning to an alumnae chapter after college helps to ensure that you stay on top of the commitment you have made.
