Du-par’s, 214 S Lake Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101
Du-par’s opened in LA’s Original Farmer’s Market in 1938. It’s a bakery and restaurant and one of the few 24 hour restaurants in the area. They’re known for their pies and buttermilk hot cakes. In Pasadena they took over Hamburger Hamlet a few years ago; HH had been at the Lake Ave. location for 40 years. The interior definitely looks old (I suspect that it hasn’t changed much since the HH days). The restaurant is enormous, with wood walls, a fireplace in the center, a bar, sconces and lots of red booths. It’s nicer than your usual diner and higher in quality.
Breakfast is served all day and you’ll find French toast, eggs, omelettes, etc. They also have sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups, dinner entrees (e.g., meatloaf, fish & chips, chicken pot pie), pies, malts, shakes, and housemade ice cream.
* Breakfast special #2 ($10.50): 2 buttermilk hot cakes with melted butter and warm maple syrup, 2 strips of bacon or turkey sausage, 1 Extra Large AA egg and coffee with unlimited refills: The buttermilk hot cakes were big, fluffy and tender though they didn’t have much buttermilk flavor. The turkey sausages were thin links. The egg was perfectly poached. The coffee was pretty typical for diner coffee.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
