High School vs AP vs Community College

Hello, this is my first blog post on this account. I thought that this would be a good general post to set the idea and layout of my blog.

Classwork VS Homework

This is one of the very first changes that you will notice. 

High School: There tends to be a lighter or easier homework load, and while there is still a fair amount of classwork, the teacher tends to guide you and outline the ideas in a less complicated format. This is optimal for students who are looking to take a class that will give them the basics of that subject. I would recommend this for subjects that you don’t plan on majoring in or that you have more difficulties with.

AP: The classwork load is not too different to that of high school courses due to the time limit; however, it tends to be more independent and require more thought process. Meanwhile, the homework is typically the same amount as a community college course or slightly less. It is also due in a similar time frame as high school classes. I would recommend this to students who want to wean into a college setting.

Community College: Expect your coursework to much more independent. Typically, the class lasts around 2-3 hours, so there is a lot more information to take in during a single class. Meanwhile, the homework load is about the same as AP classes with a long time frame to turn it in.

Time and Location

As my previous point mentions, community college class are twice or triple the time of high school/AP classes. With transportation, please keep this in mind when planning your school schedule. College means you can have weekend classes, 6 am classes, and even 8 pm classes. Plan accordingly.

This might be an expected change, but community college means that you are going to have to drive, take public transport, walk, or carpool. Due to this, it may not be an option for you to do dual enrollment. However, do know that community colleges can typically offer their students discounted, if not free, bus passes. 

Costs

High School: Congratulations! Public High School is free in America. 

AP Classes: The AP test costs $94. However, this can differ depending on your school’s policies on financial need. At my school, those with free lunch only paid $5 while those with reduced lunch paid $15. When considering that an AP class are the equivalent to 3-4 credit hours, even the full price is remarkably cheaper than a $20,000 per year tuition at a public state college! Also, keep in mind, that some schools may charge an extra fee for science classes in order to pay off the labs.

Community College: As a dual enrollment student, you may be qualified for waived tuition depending on you high school, community college, and state. For example, my community college waives all tuition fees for part-time (under 12 credit hours per semester) high school students. However, I did pay for health fees, parking, bus pass, and other other costs which totaled around $90. If your tuition is not waved, you are looking around $50-300 per credit hour. 

Mindset

Expect high school students to be less motivated to work hard in their classes since they are forced to be there, and they aren’t paying for an education. Meanwhile, community college students will be encouraged to pass their classes, maybe not with the best grades, because of the steep price of tuition. Lastly, AP students are typically the most motivated to do well because they are high school students who are hoping to earn scholarships and get into their dream school. Additionally, it’s all of nothing; even if they have perfect grades in the class, they still need to get that 5 on the AP test. They are competitive, but it also holds that same carefree and community environment that you would see in community colleges. 

So, this is it. These are the basic differences between the three, and I am totally up to more a part two if you guys find it useful!

God is soooo good to me.. At this moment, I am present to all that has transpired in my life to bring me to this place. Here I am headed to drop off a Dual Enrollment College application to our local community college with my 10th grader, so that he can take advantage during his High School years with college credit. It’s true, I have never thought of myself as traditional, so this makes since that I would take the road less traveled. 😉 . I am so grateful for this time with him, learning together, growing together and simply BEING together. Iron sharpens iron for sure, as this has been a sanctification period for both of us, to grow us as the people we care called to be. Everything in my life has led me to this place and time. . At the time of that first miscarriage, I definitely wouldn’t have dreamt that instead of those babies I had planned for, I would instead have the blessing of a wonderful, joyful, full of life son @aaron_ditzel . I was in a dark place in my health with habits that didn’t serve me, and I didn’t know a way out. I wouldn’t have found my health and healing. I would NEVER have tried #Herbalife, which has become a lifestyle for me, as well as the opportunity to support others in their journey to great health and provide extra income into our home. . And most importantly, I would never have surrendered my life to God! It was the desperation in that great time of loss that gave me the courage and humility to admit I NEEDED HELP. . His ways are higher than my ways, his plans for our lives are better than the things I could plan. .
