Pool Cleaning and Recreational Water Illnesses (RWI)
The need to treat pool water for the removal of bacteria and other disease causing germs cannot be over emphasized. The threat is great, but so is the urge to take a splash in the refreshing water on a hot summer day. The point of this piece is not to scare you away from pool water on the basis of its uncleanliness or disease causing potential. The purpose is to only elucidate on the subject so that you are better aware and able to take care of your own health and also that of your loved ones. Just to give you an idea about the potential threats, we will also talk about how resistant some of the germs are.
Speaking of resistance, let us not forget that water that has been treated can also contain harmful bacteria and germs. This is true for chlorinated water as well. This is due to the fact that germs develop resistance to chemicals if they have to deal with them regularly. Just like some cough syrups become ineffective if used over a long period of time by a wide majority of people. This is because having dealt with the same treatment for so long, the germs have become resistant to it. Nevertheless, regular treatment of pool water against these microorganisms helps protect you from them to some extent and that is a fact.
The most common disease Recreational Water Illness is diarrhea. This spreads in the water through the feces of an infected person. While it sounds disgusting, it is the truth. The most effective way to minimize the threat is to make sure everybody takes regular bathroom breaks and that they rinse themselves thoroughly afterwards, before entering the pool again. The bacterium that is responsible for transferring this disease is called Cryptrospodium. As mentioned before, it finds its way into the water through an infected person. Another reason for diarrhea being such a common RWI is that this Crypto bacterium is highly resistant to chlorine. This is so because of its hard outer covering. There is a kind of a shell around it that helps it resist the chlorine attack for a long period of time. While the bacterium enters the water through an infected person, it cannot infect someone else unless the person swallows infected water or breathes in its mist. Unfortunately, both these things happen easily while you are swimming.
There are other bacteria that can be the cause of gastro-intestinal stress, but they are less resistant that the above mentioned bacterium. E. coli upon entrance in chlorinated water is gone in less than a minute. Even the Hepatitis A virus cannot last longer than fifteen minutes after it has come into contact with chlorine. Giardia, the parasite is finished in forty five minutes. And the previously mentioned Crypto bacteria may last as long as 10.6 days in the swimming pool water, even if it is chlorinated.
