The four-part Tales From The Drift comic (story by Travis Beacham) features advanced prosthetics. The character of Duc Jessop has a prosthetic leg. It seems that in Duc and Kaori's time (Mako seems to have been about ten years old here), the PPDC was providing pilots with artificial limbs:

Here’s a sneak peak from Chapter 35: With Their Laughing Comrades…
Naomi Sokolov saw no reason to deny being a Jaeger Fly. At twenty-one, a Journalism major with several awards under her belt, she might not brag about the dates she'd gone on with Rangers so much anymore, but she still loved the Jaeger Program, and everyone around her knew it.
She was a little embarrassed by some of the things she'd gotten up to in Anchorage and freshman year, but not much. "I was a dumb teenager. It's not like I did anything terrible."
She didn't brag anymore about having gone out with Yancy Becket, but to those who sneered that she'd been a notch in his bedpost, she shrugged. "And he was a notch in mine. We're even."
As a student, she'd gained enough knowledge of the Jaeger Program and enough skill at writing that she started getting assignments on it regularly. It was a resume booster and a bragging point.
When she landed one of the only student interviews with Duc Jessop for his visit to campus, she considered that a crown jewel in her fledgling career.
In thirty minutes, her entire outlook changed.
Duc Jessop was a handsome man, but Naomi knew he'd been recently widowed, and had developed some tact - and some professionalism. She asked about his service before the Jaeger Program and K-Day, and his training for Tacit Ronin, skirting carefully around the subject of his late wife. But when she asked what led him to this university tour, his answer startled her. "Several things. I'm... looking to keep busy. And still under orders."
“Orders to do what?”
"Keep the outlook on the Jaeger Program positive."
Naomi frowned. "Off the record... would your personal outlook be less positive?"
The Ranger eyed her. "You do know what off the record means, love."
She turned off her dictaphone and said firmly, "I won't even write it down if you don't want me to, sir. But the Jaeger Program is a special project, and it's important to know more than the official line."
Now he grinned, more broadly than the polite, neutral smile that he'd been giving the deans and the reporters. "Grown up a bit, then?" She turned bright red, and he laughed. He had a nice laugh. "I recognized your name. You'd a bit of a reputation at Kodiak - not to worry, I don't hold it against you."
Chagrined, she mumbled, "I was a dumb teenager, I admit it."
"And god knows, there's not much entertainment up there. I never did get used to the weather."
"Will you not be going back to teach at the Academy after... the tour?"
"No, I will. They need some experienced pilots to live to speak about it, firsthand." He looked at her phone, still off, and said quietly, "That's a rarity. Off the record, I have a feeling it'll always be."
Naomi ran her mind through the names of every Ranger. Only five had died so far, but out of less than forty? A chill began to grow deep inside her chest. "All I really have access to are the official reports of fatalities. Are there... other complications from piloting?"
"My wife died of cancer after two years of piloting a nuclear powered mech. She wasn't the first of us to be diagnosed, and she won't be the last."
"Tidal Dragon.” Her pilots had been retired, and only one of them appeared in public. “Coyote Tango... but she’s is still in service.” Naomi could only recall having seen one of Coyote’s original pilots in the past year either.
"Yes, refitted with more shielding, and stronger protocols for pre-medicating the pilots. In the early days, we were so desperate we didn't care. Hell, I'm not even saying that was wrong. But there was a price, and the higher-ups don't want to acknowledge that when the Jaeger Program is really showing success."
"Did you all know what you were signing up for?"
"An experiment, yes. An act of desperation. After San Francisco, Cabo, and Sydney, how much worse could it get? Now we have to pretend it's under control, and there isn't still a human cost."
To be continued...
Here are the other blog entries I’ve done on my headcanons and ficverse:
A/N: After an intense conflict with a kaiju, Tacit Ronin sustained serious damage on her legs that prevented her from walking and Coyote Tango helps. Yes! This is a Jaeger shipping fic! Huarharharhar!!! This is just a one shot fic about two Jaegers and their pilots in my own head canon so suspend any related logic from here on out. Plus, I’m in the mood for speaking a little bit of Japanese… Disclaimer: Pacific Rim wa yuushimasen… demo, kono fanfic wo kaku koto wa totemo tanoshii desu!!! XD Pfff… Don’t know if it’s even correct grammatically. Translation: (I don’t own Pacific Rim… But writing this fanfic is really fun!!! XD) The Miracle Mile was again successfully retained when the kaiju fell in pieces. The toxic blue neon blood stained the greenish waving ocean as both of them stood in their triumph over the intense brawl with the fierce Category III. However, the unusually harsh ex-venting coming from her has becoming more apparent by the second. She knelt, propping herself on one of her Fang Blades. The pangs of pain ran through the drift. Duc and Kaori can feel its intensity increasing. Damage warning flashed across the screen. “Hang on, Tacit!” Kaori voiced out to her while Duc pattered on the keys to alleviate some malfunction in the system. The white Jaeger let out a deep groan from her vocalizer, trying her best to keep herself online. “Hey, are you okay?” Coyote Tango broke off from his victory basking when he noticed the state Tacit Ronin was in. He scooted from his place to help her stand. “Is everything alright in there?” Stacker’s voice rang through the comm-line. “Yeah, well, we’re having a bit of a set back here…” Duc’s reply was cut off by Tacit. “No! I’m okay. I just need a couple of breather. I’ll be okay. J-just wait a few more minutes and we’ll be on our way…” she said this in between gasps which made Coyote more unconvinced that she was in any better condition. “Tacit, that damn kaiju nearly bit your leg off! How can you be okay with that?” He took a grip at her shoulders to stabilize her wobbling. “Look, we can still go back to the Shatterdome. We only need to walk. Can you walk?” There was a burst of trepidation in Stacker and Tamsin’s side of the drift. They both looked at each other still unsure what to make of it. She shot an indignant look at him. “Of course I can. Now let me go. I can stand on my own!” A thought flashed in the drift that Kaori caught as a little anxiety; she was afraid of revealing something to her fellow Jaeger. Duc noticed it too and shut the comm-link. “It’s okay, Tacit. He wouldn’t be mean enough to say that out loud to you,” Duc assured. “But what if he does? I mean, I’ve tried hard enough to stay out of this kind of situation…” “And things don’t always fall into your control, dear. Just face it. With your condition now, there’s no telling when we’re going back to the Shatterdome.” Kaori tried to persuade her out of her doubts. “Look, if you don’t want him to know about it, we can always have the V-50 Jumphawks as an option. Your choice.” “No, not those! You know I never liked them to carry me.” Tacit refused the latter, trying not to remember the last time those cargo lifters had transported her. “Oh, that…” she smiled rather sheepishly as she just recalled the memory. Coyote huffed. “What is going on in there?” Stacker hushed him. “Coyote, I’m sure they’re trying to work something out now. Be patient.” Tamsin chuckled. A thought between drift-space brewing, telling the Jaeger to be ready for any possibilities. However, the dark grey Jaeger could not bring himself to wait any longer and called out to her. “No, I’m still not going to let him know about this!” She decided to pick herself up by using the Fang Blade as support. Just as soon as she put a strain on one of her legs, a sharp pain immediately burst into her sensor net. She screamed at the flare and tumbled on her knees in deep frustration, blurting out every cursing word she had stored in her processor. Duc and Kaori felt her pain jabbing through the system. Coyote huffed, knowing how stubborn the white mech can get. “You know, for a very quiet Jaeger, you can really be a loud glitch sometimes.” “Don’t get me started on that one!” she spat. She attempted one more time only to end up yelling at herself in more searing pain. She vented hard. Her optic started to white out from all the exertion. The dark grey mech could tell by her flickering visor stirring worry in him. “Hey, easy there, Tacit. You don’t have to press so hard on yourself.” “No. I can still do this!” Her persistence remained as she doggedly trying to angle herself to stand. “Tacit, come on! This isn’t the time or place to be stubborn!” Duc turned the comm-link back on. “You can’t stand with legs like that. Just look…” he was silenced by her piercing grunt. The water around her swished when she managed to stand up on her pedes. Coyote was impressed by the sheer amount of determination the mech have when faced with such predicament. Then again, her achievement is short-lived when she stumbled forward kicking the other into action to catch her before her face hit into the ocean floor. The drift melded thoughts and will amongst the dark Jaeger and his pilots. “Tacit!” He shouted. “Coyote… I can still do this…” she said meekly. “Your system is almost out, Tacit. Don’t push it too hard!” Duc warned. “That’s it! Tacit, you’re in a bad shape right now. We’ll have more time to argue later when we are back into the Shatterdome. Now don’t you start saying crap about you can still do this and that! It’s tiring, okay! Just stay put and don’t move!” Coyote ordered with finality. Stacker knew that this little game was up and decided to contact the main base for confirming their return. After he did so, he was immediately surprised at what the Jaeger is about to do. Tamsin could only raise her eyebrow and said, “Yep.” Tacit yelped when a sudden jolt resulted by Coyote’s arms lifting her chassis up in a zero gravity position. The inevitable have finally happened, she thought. Now he will say the thing that she had dreaded for a long time about her weight. Her frame stiffened, feeling awkward at the sudden situation. “Coyote…” She tried to squirm but shushed by his firm grasp. Neither side could argue more about the unavoidable situation they were in right now. Duc and Kaori could not help but smile. A wide grin lit up their faces as they felt another burst of emotion from their beloved Jaeger. She was embarrassed. Stacker and Tamsin laughed. He puffed a vent of air as he shifted her back snugly into his arms and started walking in the direction of the command center. The dark mech stayed quiet during the journey while Tacit lay motionless in his cradling. Stacker and Tamsin concentrated on the walking whilst Duc and Kaori just let the course of event continued. All that was left to listen to is the sound of the water made by the wading robot. Amidst the tranquility, she managed to steal a few look at him. It was hard to tell if the mech would feel any discomfort from carrying a Jaeger with three times the weight of Cherno Alpha. Yet, she was a bit glad that he did not mention any of that along the way. She looked on. A thought began to form in her processor that this Jaeger is actually good looking. With that cool blue visor, those broad shoulders and the way he carried himself with such power and poise, makes her want to know him better. She found herself blushing at these thoughts that she turned her helm away. Duc and Kaori sensed the slight temperature rise and beamed. “What is it?” Coyote looked down at her. “No-nothing. I just… a-are we there yet?” She felt rather mortified when she heard herself stuttered. “Almost. Just a few kilometers away. I can see the building now.” He went onward not bothering to stop. When they arrived, a flurry of busy humans was already waiting at the bay, welcoming them back, to check on damages and whatnot. Coyote slowly placed Tacit onto her stage, taking note not to harm her legs and the humans below them. He told them to take care of her legs and look out for some fractured metal or a bit of kaiju tooth stuck in there. Some of the engineers rolled their eyes at his concerns and some of them are quite amused too. Tacit could only huff quietly at his caring nature. Other than that, she coyly nodded her thanks to him with a warm flush in her cheeks. “See, that wasn’t so bad. I told you he won’t say anything about your weight,” said Duc in amusement. “Whatever.” Tacit grumbled. Kaori hummed cheerfully. “Hey, you three,” Tamsin chipped in. “Coyote only did what he could to help. He’s very thoughtful like that.” “Aww, so adorable! That Coyo-chan!” Kaori laughed. “Alright, ladies. You can continue chatting after this. We’ll see you all again at the Marshall’s office,” Stacker nonchalantly said. Coyote Tango could only stay still in his own blushing. When Coyote was satisfied that the other Jaeger is in good hands, they took him to his own bay where his own team of engineers would get him into his top shape again. When all their work is done, he was left alone in his holding bay and started to gasp and wince, gripping and loosening his servos, rubbing all over his arms and exclaimed ever so quietly, “she’s so heavy!” After the little relief, he finally drifted off into power down mode. End note: OMG! Coyote Tango is such a super caring Jaeger. How could he ever endured such an ordeal is really beyond me. I mean, she weighs like three Chernos there, man and he still not mentioning any of that to Tacit. He is such a gentleman or rather a gentlejaeger… whatever. Tacit got a sort of crush on him now. How cute! XD
