The magnificent #MargaretCavendish nee Lucas - #DuchessofNewcastle 1623-1673 can leave no one in doubt the #British & #Irish value eccentricity & honour it as part of our national identity ⚜️ #History is made by those who dare, not by those who don’t. And oh how #margaretcavendish #Duchessofnewcastle dared! At a #salon in #Versailles Bare-breasted - her nipples painted red - she tore strips off fellow #scientists for cutting up living animals as she insisted they were #sentientbeings ! In 1650 in Versailles at the Palace of the #SunKing where Queen-Henrietta Marie #OscarWildes #Idol was in exile with her son #KingCharlesII & the rest of the #StuartCourt she #scandalised the world by deliberately sneaking into England to publish her scientific essays under her own name. From the age of 14 Margaret blazed across the stage of the most sensational era of British #History #Scientist #antivivisectionist #feminist #author #poet #saloniere & great #beauty. She irrevocably changed the way women were viewed & The way they viewed themselves. Despite writing the histories first #Distopean novel "The Blazing World" more ink was spilled describing her sensational deeds of daring do & extraordinary costumes. From the age of 4 she began using #fashion as well as #literature to subvert & express ideas that were to turn the scientific world upside down - for not only was she a patron of #Descartes #Hooke & other #philosophical luminaries she was an influencer in her own right. She was the first to argue for the rights of animals & demand anti-vivisection laws arguing a man was only as noble as how well he treated his least loved horse or dog. She was also one half of the greatest #love stories of history as one half of The First #powercouple as wife of #WilliamCavendish the greatest #Cavalier of the Age who added his own poetry & artworks to her books. For all her critics she was adored & admired & her state funeral procession exceeded all others as men & women of all classes came out to honour this Great Eccentric who blazed across the Restoration as a symbol of hope for all #eccentrics & all those who dared to #dream beyond the scope of what was deemed possible. The famous #eccentric #duchessofnewcastle Margaret Cavendish spearheaded the #scientificrevolution & hostest the most famous #eccentric salons in #1640s & #1650s while in exile in #Versailles & Antwerp attended by #descartes #Digby & #Hobbes during #Cromwells #pogrom on eccentrics #artists & #newideas & #genocides in the #Irish #Cornish & #Welsh - She is considered the worlds first antivivisectionist & published & presented the first #antivivisection #scietificpaper on the sentience of animals. The world celebrated with Britain in this joyous year and James was gifted elephants camels giraffes and a host of exotic birds whose ancestors are still to be found wandering around Saint Jameses Park. Sadly the puritans murdered the elephants camels and giraffes as being sinful papist creatures as part of the problem on the arts beauty and pleasure. The Eccentrics will explore the the greatestest Eccentrics of the Baroque Age, including the magnificent Margaret Cavendish Duchess of Newcastle Friend of Descartes Kenelm Digby Newton & Queen Henriette-Marie & The Sun King, she was philosopher, protofeminist & she also wrote the world’s first science fiction book. The Blazing World Her husband, William Cavendish Duke of Newcastle wrote the rules of Horse Racing & created the art of Dressage. Together they lead the Scientific Revolution & started the world’s first #antivivisection movement both great friends to Queen Henrietta Marie the Consort of King CharlesI who built Covent Garden & Much of Mayfair with Inigo Jones in the 1620’s - 1630’s. The Duke of Newcastle oversaw CharlesII & JamesII's education instilling in them that women were to be valued for their minds as much as their bodies. (at Home House)
