So I have a lovely siamese cat who is OBSESSED with carbs. All rice, uncooked noodles, and bread must be hidden in cupboards or he will tear through the packaging and eat them. He has also sampled stolen toast and doughnuts. I've been told cats can't digest carbs and I even have him on fancy grain free food. But if carbs really have no value for cats, why does he seem to crave them? Question tax: Came for vet stuff, stayed for your great sense of humor and occasional pics of Trash Bag

Cats can digest carbohydrates and use them as an energy source as well as any other mammal. They have a high absolute requirement for protein but a cat can eat and utilize carbohydrates as well so long as it has met that requirement.

The most common carbohydrate that a cat (or other feline) eating a wild-type diet is going to encounter is glycogen. Glycogen is your body’s carbohydrate storage, found in particularly high concentrations in muscle and liver. Animals are perfectly capable of digesting this easy access bundle of glucose, cats included.

Starch is the digestible glucose storage molecule of plants. It also is made up of glucose, and these glucose molecules are attached to each other with the same type of bonds (alpha bond). The same pathways that a body uses to digest glycogen are also used to digest starch.

Both starch and glycogen are converted into glucose, the basic energy molecule outside the cell. All normal cells can derive energy from glucose, it’s a basic cornerstone of cell biology. Cats are not mysteriously exempt from being able to utilize glucose.

Like many things, the internet has grabbed a complex concept, simplified it and run with it. Saying ‘cats have a high protein requirement’ has been turned into ‘cats can’t eat anything else’ which isn’t the case.

The presence of grain or carbohydrates in food isn’t as big a deal as the internet likes to make it, so long as enough protein is in the diet. You can have extra protein, and as long as your cat has happy kidneys that’s not a problem. By all means feed grain free if it works for your cat, but I’m not going to chastise someone for feeding a cat food with grains in it. Hey, I do it. It keeps my old girl going while her kidneys are circling the drain.

Your cat probably also likes the novel texture. There’s many studies that suggest cats are more particular about texture than about taste for the food they eat.
