Dudley Town (AKA The Cursed Town)

Not long ago I heard about a town called "Dudley Town" in Connecticut.

A local rumor that has been frequently shared on the internet alleges the founders of Dudleytown were descended from Edmund Dudley, an English nobleman who was beheaded for treason during the reign of Henry VIII

According to alleged rumors because of their treason the family was cursed, this cursed included crop failures, mental illness as well as several purported violent deaths.

In the history of Dudley Town, it is said that it once was a forest that was converted into farmland. However due to the lack of fertlization in the area the crops would fail to grow.

Records have shown the land was, originally, occupied by the Mohawk Nation, as sacred ground.

According to the Wiki, it states that the town was a distance away from clean water and as I stated before: unstable soil for cultivation. (The soil wasn't good for planting corps.)

However, this isn't where it ends. Does anyone remember the Warrens? I'm talking about Ed and Lorraine Warren. A couple that were paranormal investigators. Their biggest hit was Annabel, the cursed Raggedy Anne doll.

They also visted this town, I am unsure when, but when they said they claimed "There is something evil within this place." and apprently there are multiple things within that town, not just one.

I do personally find these types of hauntings fasinating and very curious. However my job isn't to make every piece of information available.

However I will add some pieces of information left as to supposeably why they closed this place off from the public and places you can go via link to read more about the rumors, the history and so on. I would do it myself, but I unfourtanetly didn't have well enough sleep and my eyes hurt from looking at this screen. According to offical reports: The reason the Dudley Town is off limits to the public is because of trespassers and vandalism. (If any of my spelling is fucked up. I am sorry.) Fun facts as well for the topic: Apparently you can't find any pictures of the town from the inside, just only outside because cameras malfunction once you enter, but when you leave its working just fine. In other notes: What do you think is the real reason behind this curse? Is it real or is it just rumors? Would you explore this place? I know I would.

Dudleytown is a village that is said to be under a horrible curse. The Village was founded in 1738 by The Dudley Family who are the ones who were apparently cursed. All of them died soon after settling in Dudleytown.

However, some say that the curse then spread to the rest of the village since the population began to decrease rapidly after the Dudley’s had died out.

There were a greater than average number of violent deaths, accidents, suicides and cases of insanity in the small town. The village was completely abandoned in the 1800s and now all that remains is the foundations and some ruins.

Dudleytown is now owned by The Dark Entry Forest Association and they rarely grant access. However, those who have been granted permission to stop by for a visit say that many of the former residents are still there in the form of ghosts.

Upon entering the village, visitors often experience a strong sense of dread and have seen orbs of light and unexplained shadow figures in the area. There are no birds or animals in the area either which only adds to the creepy feeling here!

The Village of the Damned

Dudleytown, Cornwall, Connecticut is frequently referred to as “The Village of the Damned.” Many consider it to be one of, if not the, most haunted places in Connecticut and possibly even in New England.

It was founded in the 1740s by a man named Thomas Griffis but later it got the name Dudleytown due to a good amount of the Dudley family moving over and settling in the area. The reason the Dudleys are significant is that the patriarch, Edmund Dudley worked for King Henry VII and was beheaded for treason. Purportedly, when Edmund was executed, a curse fell over the Dudley family and it followed them over to the United States. However, local historians say that there is no evidence that the settlers of Dudleytown were actually related to Edmund. It would be interesting to look into how the connection was formed in the minds of locals as this legend grew.

The area itself is pretty wooded and was cleared to be farmland. However, it was abandoned in the late 1800s. The legend involves the town succumbing to some sort of mass hysteria/madness and throughout the years, members of the Dudley family dying violent and horrific deaths. These deaths included a woman being struck by lightning and several suicides. Additionally, Thomas Dudley, supposedly one of the sons of Edmund, was found hacked to death and the murderer was never brought to justice. On top of the deaths, there were also claims of demons, hoofed creatures, and children that went missing, though of course all of this is difficult to verify. While these are interesting tales, there are speculations that the final abandonment of the settlement could have been due to the settlement being too far away from potable water or even that the land intended to be farmed was not viable for that reason, though it begs the question as to how the settlement lasted for approximately 150 years if either of those scenarios are the case.

One of the paranormal claims by locals and visitors is that the forest being eerily still and silent. This is interesting in particular given that the area has been owned by a private organization called the Dark Entry Forest Association, named after the road that is near the area but has since been changed to Bald Mountain Road, for over 80 years. This association is apparently pretty secret and difficult to find any information on. Additionally, it has the area heavily guarded (big fines for parking or for being caught walking around [read the comments on this flickr photo about it]) because their intent was to plant trees and help grow the natural ecosystem of the area. If that’s the case, why is it so quiet? If nothing else, the area is supposedly quite dark, even on a sunny day. Additionally, the site is said to have an air of sadness to it. Some people still believe in the curse that was placed on the Dudley family and advise others not to take anything from the site to avoid taking the curse home. Other paranormal claims include orbs, light anomalies, smoke/mist (ectoplasm?), mysterious voices, and, of course, ghosts. Here’s a short account of one paranormal experience.

In fact, paranormal investigators/demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Connecticut’s most famous paranormal investigators) have visited the site and declared it haunted, including it in their seminars. Does that give it some credence? I’d think so.

DUDLEY TOWN, CONNECTICUT

Dudley town is an abandoned eighteenth-century village in the woods of Cornwall, Connecticut and one of the most curious haunted locations in America.

Members of the Dudley family were among the first to settle into the area in the mid-1740s, earning their living by cutting lumber to fuel iron production in a nearby town. It wasn't long before there were reports of strange beasts and apparitions and a host of strange, unusual and violent deaths, suicides and corpse mutilations. Over the years many people, believing that the Dudley family were cursed, left Dudley town, and by 1900 it was mostly deserted.

During the 1920s a man called Dr. William C. Clark set up a summer home in the abandoned town. One evening he came back from a business trip to find his wife talking hysterically about the apparitions and demons that had visited. She killed herself soon after.

Even today some visitors to Dudley still report disembodied voices whispering and laughing. A woman on a white horse has been spotted, among other apparitions. People also hear wagon wheels and other sounds of the past. Curiously few living sounds are heard, as birds and animals never seem to settle in the area. This may be due to lack of sunshine as, being in the shadow of three mountains, the town receives little natural light, but others believe that Dudley is an area of negative energy that attracts evil spirits and entities.
