Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, Pardoned and Released from the Tower After the Fall of Lady Jane Grey’s Rebellion
On July 31, 1553, Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, was pardoned and released from the Tower of London after his failed attempt to place his daughter, Lady Jane Grey, on the English throne. His brief rise to power had ended just days earlier when supporters of Mary I rallied behind her claim and overturned Jane’s nine-day reign.
Suffolk had been one of the leading figures behind Jane’s accession, accepting the will of Edward VI that attempted to alter the succession and prevent a Catholic monarch from taking the throne. However, when Mary gained widespread support, Suffolk abandoned the cause and tried to distance himself from the rebellion.
Although spared immediate execution, Suffolk’s pardon was temporary. After becoming involved in Wyatt’s Rebellion against Mary I’s proposed marriage to Philip of Spain in 1554, he was arrested again and executed for treason. His downfall became one of the most dramatic episodes of the Tudor succession crisis, showing the dangers of challenging a monarch’s claim to the English throne.
