Thing-A-Day #869 - The Dumpster Cats, Excerpt #1

I’ve been playing around with the idea of writing a script encompassing a lot of stories surrounding the Dumpster Cats, and this is just one scene from such a concept. Somewhat loosely based on Chairpocalypse: Never Say Never Say Never, this scene tries to set up the characters, their interactions, and some useful terminology for the rest of the film.

I dunno. We’ll see where it goes.

Thing-A-Day #602 -  The Dumpster Cats: Monochrome [Part 2]

[Part 2 of 2 of a new Dumpster Cats short film script. Part One can be found here! Follow the project at @dumpstercats!]

SUNSHINE: Wow. All of you are so negative. This is a wonderful shirt, can’t you see? REM: That’s the problem, that we can see it. SUNSHINE: Wow. That was low. Well, since you guys won’t believe me, I guess I’ll need to get someone else’s opinion. [Sunshine looks around, but finds no one new.] SYZYGY: Sunshine, no one else is here. SUNSHINE: I’ll take this outside then! [Sunshine puts their coat on over the shirt and dramatically turns around, walking back out the door. The remaining Dumpster Cats look around amongst each other, and step in gear to follow Sunshine out the door.]

SUNSHINE: [on the outside, to Monochrome who is walking by] Excuse me ma’am, can I ask your opinion on something? [Monochrome walks over as all the Dumpster Cats come outside] MONOCHROME: Is it on that coat, because my, is it vibrant! SUNSHINE: [looking down] Oh, thank you! That’s not what this is about, but… MONOCHROME: [cutting Sunshine off] Oh my. You took that as a compliment? Oh no. Dear, that coat is terrible. The only reason I’m okay with that stabbing at my eyes is because I want my eyes to be stabbed out after seeing it anyway. SUNSHINE: [slightly disappointed] That was harsh. MONOCHROME: Let me fix that, child. [Monochrome lifts her hand and the color drains out of the coat, much to everyone’s shock. Amulet and Syzygy look at each other as if they should keep track of her.] HYPOTHETICAL SID: Oh my gosh! She just sucked the color out of that coat! MONOCHROME: And thank goodness I could too! Imagine if someone were to leave that uncorrected! What a monstrosity! AMULET: I mean, it wasn’t that bad. MONOCHROME: And what do you know? I’ve been a designer, changing the world to be more aesthetically pleasing for the past 45 years! I'm doing the world a favor, and no one can tell me otherwise! SYZYGY: Hey, Sunshine. You should open your coat. [Monochrome, who is looking at Syzygy, continues to do so until Sunshine’s coat is opened. When it is, she looks over to it not knowing what to expect. She clutches her chest.] MONOCHROME: Oh God! What have you done?? SUNSHINE: It actually didn’t come like this. I made it more personal with the paint and glitter over here. [pointing to a part of the shirt] I think it looks good! MONOCHROME: Oh God. Oh God. I want to vomit. [she quickly lifts her hand, and they all wait for the shirt to turn gray, but it doesn’t happen] Oh no. Why isn’t this working?? SUNSHINE: I mean, I really did put my soul into this shirt. MONOCHROME: This has never failed me before. [she starts backing up] This is a sin I cannot forgive, mark my words! Do not think you are off the hook! [she turns around and starts running away] HYPOTHETICAL SID: Well, isn’t that great! Now we have a new enemy! Wait till The Brain finds out! [she goes inside, along with Goes Boom] AMULET: [turning to Syzygy, and putting 5 dollars in their hand] I don’t know how you knew that’d happen. SYZYGY: [smugly] It was in the stars. [Both Syzygy and Amulet go inside, leaving Sunshine and REM outside.] REM: Put on a different shirt, Sunshine. [She walks back inside.] SUNSHINE: [shrugging, talking to themself] Ehh, I have brighter shirts anyway. [Sunshine finally walks inside, and the scene ends.]

Thing-A-Day #589 - The Dumpster Cats: Monochrome [Part 1]

[Part 1 of 2 of a new Dumpster Cats short film script. Follow the project at @dumpstercats!]

[The scene opens on the Dumpster Cats - REM, Goes Boom, and Hypothetical Sid - cleaning up the headquarters after the Serbians have left from the last movie.]

HYPOTHETICAL SID: Wow, those Serbians were messy. REM: Actually most of this was from the zombies and giant monster thing. HYPOTHETICAL SID: Either way, we need this place to look good before the rest of them get back from Antarctica. REM: [leans on the broom she’s using] We don’t know when they’re getting back… [yawns] It could be days, really. Months. [yawns even heavier and lays down] years. HYPOTHETICAL SID: Get up! It’s not going to be years before they get back! We’ve failed too much to have this place look like a mess. What if they come back and see this? What would Commander Squeak think?

[The scene cuts to a woman walking outside. She’s completely in gray, even with gray skin. She looks to her left and sees some colorful flowers]

MONOCHROME: [with a disgusted look] Eww. [she raises her hand slightly and the color drains out of the flowers] Better.

[A bus passes her, and goes down the road the Dumpster Cats’ lair. It stops, and a couple of Dumpster Cats get off in heavy winter jackets. They walk toward the lair, being loud and boisterous along the way.] [The scene cuts to Hypothetical Sid (sweeping), REM (sleeping), and Goes Boom (playing with a firecracker) inside near the door, when the others walk in]

HYPOTHETICAL SID: Ahh! You're back! REM: [waking up and yawning] Syzygy! Amulet! [yawns again] Welcome back! AMULET: Hey, it’s good to be back! HYPOTHETICAL SID: Wait, where’s Commander Squeak? SYZYGY: Squeak stayed back in, umm, Antarctica. They had some business the Brain had ‘em do. HYPOTHETICAL SID: Oh, okay. What about Sunshine? REM: Tell me Sunshine stayed back in Antarctica. Please. AMULET: Sorry REM, Sunshine came back. I'm not sure where they are though… They were on the bus with us…

[Suddenly, the door bursts open, and Sunshine comes in in too dramatic a fashion]

SUNSHINE: Hello, hello! It’s been so looong!! And how are we all, in the companionhood of our best friends? REM: Hey Sunshine. SUNSHINE: Amulet, Syzygy! You left your luggage on the bus!

[Sunshine puts down the luggage on the floor. It cuts to them. They are suitcases with Hawaiian stickers on them, with HAWAIʻI crossed out in red sharpie and replaced with ANTARCTICA.]

HYPOTHETICAL SID: Wait, did you guys go to Hawaii? I thought you were in Antarctica! AMULET: [scoffingly] Nah. What makes you think that? HYPOTHETICAL SID: The suitcase says you went to Hawaii! SYZYGY: Oh umm no. Those are Sunshine’s stickers. They put them on to help cheer us up while at the South Pole. Right Sunshine? SUNSHINE: No, but that’s a brilliant idea! I need to invest in more stickers to help cheer up the team! [kisses Syzygy on the cheek] Thank you so much, Syzygy!! SYZYGY: [clearly disgusted] No problem. AMULET: The point is, we did not go to Hawaii. Look at us! We’re clearly decked out in all this awesome Antarctic gear. SUNSHINE: Exactly! SYZYGY: Speaking of which, it’s getting pretty hot keeping this on.

[Syzygy takes off their coat, and underneath they’re wearing a shirt that says Hawaii on it, with a picture of a palm tree. Amulet takes off their coat at the same time, theirs with Only In Hawaii written on it, with a picture of a tropical fish. They look down at each others’ shirt]

AMULET: Crap HYPOTHETICAL SID: Oh my God! You actually went to Hawaii! We fought zombies here, and you were in Hawaii! SUNSHINE: Well, I guess the cat’s out of the bag! [Sunshine takes off their coat, and shows the most disgustingly bright Hawaiian shirt ever conceived.] Isn’t it beautiful?! HYPOTHETICAL SID: Oh wow. SYZYGY: God, that’s disgusting. [Syzygy says this as Amulet makes a puking gesture in the background. Goes Boom looks up from a firecracker she’s playing with and it makes a small explosion.] REM: [on the floor] My eyes are closed and I can STILL see that shirt. AMULET: A shirt like that can get you in trouble, Sunshine.
