Dundee FC, the Black Watch and the American Revolution
Dundee Football Club have recently unveiled the third football kit for the 2019/20 season, in association with the Armed Forces charity and the Black Watch Association. It bears along with the club badge the crest of the Black Watch (now a part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland), and the red feathers worn by members of the famous regiment.
The origins of the feathers date back to the American Revolutionary War and the Black Watch’s participation in the battle of Paoli in 1777. Threatened with retaliation by American revolutionary forces for their part in the vicious engagement, both the British light infantry and the Black Watch adopted red hackles or feathers in their caps as a mark of pride and aggression.
