i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

The year I noticed stuff going on outside the backyard was 1984. I do remember parts of the LA Summer Olympics, of course (Mary Lou Retton's perfect 10!), but is that news or sports?

The first real news I remember was the absolutely bonkers 1984 US presidential election landslide. Those were some crazy times.

Some days I wish we could just get the inevitable apocalypse over with in one big crash or bang, rather than this slow creep like an ʻAʻā lava flow of climate change and fascism that everyone just stands around watching as it makes its way down the street.

Some people think ill of Doctor Seward because of today's entry. He is tempted to do something monstrous to satisfy his curiosity, and for a brief time attempts to justify it...like, we might learn a lot! But of course, he doesn't actually do it. And I think that shows his character as an ultimately good man.

They say the true test of a person's morals is what we do when no one is watching. The only ones who would ever have known what he was doing were those who trusted and respected him as a doctor. They would never have questioned his course of action. No one else would ever need to know--unless, of course, there was a great breakthrough of a discovery. But then, only like-minded peers would ever really get to study his methods.

And temptation is like that. That's what makes it temptation. Your brain tries to rationalize what you really want to do, and it can be super hard to say no, that's wrong, we're not doing that.

But that's what Seward does. He thinks about it, kinda justifies it, and still doesn't do it. Because it's wrong. And I think that is a great way for Bram Stoker to show us just what kind of man he is: flawed, but ultimately choosing good.

Yes exactly. Like, everyone lost their minds when Netflix said they had used AI for a special effect in one of their movies. But, wasn't what Peter Jackson developed to control hoards of orcs attacking Helm's Deep a form of AI? That stuff has been used for decades in movie making and video games. Our phones have been using artificial intelligence for ages. Spellcheck and predictive text are a kind of AI, and Google has been using some form of intelligent computing to compile results for years before the AI summaries came out and made them look stupid.

But now it's all lumped together as one newspeak buzzword: all the good that came before along with this awfulness being thrust upon us now, and it is confusing.

Look at when NaNoWriMo came out with their "shame on you all for hating on AI when it helps people write" without distinguishing between tools meant to assist actual writers and tools used to produce slop, so they're basically defending LLM generated novels and spellcheck in one breath, without ever clarifying. I still don't know what they really meant (I didn't stick around to find out).

And of course it's all deliberate. Using one term for so many different things breaks down intelligent discourse between human beings, which is the number one enemy of those who wish to control us.
