THE CURRENT STATE OF THRASH METAL. Are you worried about the state of trash metal these days? The “Big 4″ thrash metal bands are retiring (Slayer) or getting close to it after 30+ years of hard living. Whether we like it or not, the next generation of thrash bands is going to be caring the torch pretty soon. Here’s a list of recent thrash metal albums that gives me hope for the future. I highly recommend you check out any of these albums if you’re looking for new thrash bands to follow.

Death Angel - The Evil Divide. (I know they’ve been around about as long as the Big 4 bands have, but they are still pumping out fresh thrash for you to chew on).

Dust Bolt - Mass Confusion. German-based thrash band that stays true to the Bay-Area sound.

Exmortus - The Sound of Steel. This is thrash metal with neo-classical elements. The guitar work is beautiful as it is heavy.

Ghoul - Dungeon Bastards. You want some horror with your thrash? Check this out.

Hatchet - Dying to Exist. This is my favorite release in 2018 so far. Hatchet presents the elements I loved most about 80′s era Megadeth and Slayer, with a modern, fresh twist that makes each song memorable. If you try only one album on this list, make it this one.

Havok - Conformicide. A thrash album with bass that is not only audible, but often the focal point of a song? Yes, please! This band is pure thrash for the modern man who prays for a remix of And Justice for All with Jason’s bass added to the mix. The style is closer to mid-80s Megadeth, but again, with dynamic bass guitar work throughout. 

Power Trip - Nightmare Logic. This is Texas thrash metal. Best enjoyed loud on a powerful set of speakers.

Warbringer - Woe to the Vanquished. I can’t give enough praise to Warbringer. There are NWOBHM influences, along with hints of Maiden, Slayer, Metallica and other thrash giants here. You want epic songs about the horrors of war and violence? Check. Melodic guitar solos? Check. Riffs that put you at risk for neck injuries? Yup. Go pick this up.

Witchery - In His Infernal Majesty’s Service. This band might be a little closer to melodic death metal than thrash metal, but it’s close enough to warrant listing it here. Witchery is just awesome. Pure bliss throughout this entire album.

Iron Reagan - Crossover Ministry. If I had to describe this album in one word, it would be “fun.” Rediscover why it is you started listening to thrash in the first place as a teenager. It’s heavy, thrash, a little punky, and irreverent. Exactly the type of thing that would anger your mom and dad.
