You graduated two weeks later and Steve and you had not shared a word since that day in the school’s parking lot. It seemed as though Steve was ignoring you just as much as you ignored him. Or maybe he just did exactly what he did, when you were together. You didn’t know.
You had Dustin give him all his belongings he had left at your house. It was ironic. You knew it also was a little embarrassing to let your little brother give him his belongings. But you didn’t, ever, want to talk to him again.
The thing’s you didn’t notice though, were Steve waiting outside of your classroom for a moment, wanting to talk to you. Wanting to tell you everything he had been hiding from you.
It wasn’t that Steve wanted to hurt you. And most importantly, he didn’t want to lie to you. But after he had been swept into fighting a monster in the Byers‘ house, he couldn’t bear to also let your life get ruined.
Steve wanted you to move away for collage as soon as possible, never hearing of Hawkins again. He wanted you to get successful in whatever career you chose to pursue. That’s why he decided not to follow you when you broke up. And that’s why Steve decided to pretend you never existed. Even though it hurt him like hell.
He didn’t lie because he was a bad guy. He lied because he loved you. That’s, at least, what he told himself each time he left just before your class ended. Just before you could see him standing there.
Graduating felt weird. Although graduating had been something you had been looking forward to, graduating alone wasn’t what you had wanted. Steve and you had plans for the time after High School. He had wanted to take a job while you had a few free months, until you would leave for collage.
It felt weird that those plans had been reason to work forward to and now they were just.. gone.
You always had thought of him to be at your side when getting the certificate. But things didn’t always turn out the way people thought they would. And so he was just another graduate beside you. Just not in the way you wanted him to.
Your summer, turned out, wasn’t going as planned as well. During the Holidays, Dustin went to summer camp. It’s what he always did, spending his summer in a camp and coming back smarter than he was before.
It wasn't until your brother came back, that Steve Harrington did appear everywhere. While Dustin was away, you had a great time avoiding him. Even everything which had to do with him. It was possible for you to go to the store without seeing him. And on top of that, you were able to stay at home without hearing Steve’s voice through a Walkie Talkie. Hell, you didn't even know if he still was in Hawkins. It felt good. You felt free. You weren’t reminded and that was good. You even thought that maybe, just maybe, you were over him.
But then, summer camp was over and Dustin came back. Indeed smarter than before but also even more eager to spend time with no other than Steve. It seemed as though, during Dustin’s summer camp vacation, their friendship had grown stronger. Wherever you were able to avoid Steve Harrington during summer, he now was!
He seemed to be everywhere. Even in your house you weren't safe, because Dustin still kept his Walkie Talkie with him. All the time!
You didn’t understand how their friendship had grown into this huge thing.
“Maybe they wrote letters while Dustin went to camp,“ you thought.
Whatever it was though, you were happy for Dustin. He really seemed to enjoy having an older friend.
While at dinner a few days ago, Dustin had enthusiastically told your mom about how great of a friend Steve was. And how cool it had been to visit him at his new job.
“He even gives out his free ice cream to me!“ He said proudly.
That’s how you found out why you didn’t see Steve all summer. Apparently, Steve had started working at an ice cream shop called “Scoops Ahoy“. The shop was one of the newest additions to the Star court Mall, which was a few minutes drive away from Hawkins.
But the point was that Dustin seemed happy. Genuinely happy. And since Will Byers had disappeared and then appeared again, him being happy meant everything. So you weren’t going to ruin that for him.
Though, you couldn’t help but feel a deep, aching pain, each time you saw your ex boyfriend.
Steve on the other hand, didn’t seem to feel the same thing. That’s at least how you observed it. Every time he picked up your brother, he seemed to not see you. As if he wasn’t trying to avoid you, but as if you just really weren’t someone he noticed anymore.
It was fine with you. After all, he had been the one who distanced himself. And at the same time, knowing you were irrelevant to him hurt like hell. Because, originally, you had been the one who wanted more time together, instead of none at all.
And then, after a few weeks, things began to feel more normal again. Or so you thought.
