Re-release of Sherlock S3 in Germany
I was wondering if season 3 of Sherlock is going to be re-released with the new bonus material for the German market so I wrote Polyband an e-mail and this is what they replied:
Hallo liebe xx,
So there will be a German edition of the new DVD/Blu-ray version but definitely not this year and it's yet unclear when exactly it'll be released.
But it's in the works so that's good news in any case.
Lieb sein, Piepschwein.
Watson to Holmes, at some point, probably
So after S3 my verdict on the German dubbing is that it's 80% great work, 10% questionable choices and 10% WTF-worthy.
It's impossible to translate everything with 100% accuracy and I'm not mad at them, I think they did the best they could for the most part.
Questionable things I'd say are "Sauhund" instead of "cock" and leaving out the "mate" completely.
The thing that gets me the most however is the "Scheiße" (German equivalent for "shit") in Sherlock's mind palace in HLV when he's pulling the real Lazarus aka bringing himself back to life. I've never heard that in the original and it's so completely out of place and out of character (as someone else has pointed out, I think stepfordgeek?).
Now where it's getting really funny: the German translation gives us Sherlock screaming "John" when he leaves the padded cell. In the English version it's harder to make out if Sherlock really screams John's name at that point but he does say "John" eventually when he's climbing up the stairs. However, when he's climbing up the stairs we're getting "Scheiße" in the German dubbing. That's breaking my brain a little. There's nothing in the original subtitles (I only have the UK Blu-ray), neither "John" nor "shit" or anything at all, so really, what was in the original script they received for the translation?
(Sorry if this is confusing, let me know if I need to clarify anything.)
I'd really like to hear about different dubbings, how did they dub this in France, Spain, Poland, anywhere else in the world?
Danke ^^
Oh mein Gott
