DSoD DVD Question

I bought the DSoD DVD hoping that they would have resolved the subtitle problem.  But the one I received has the dub lines.

I know that there is a way to get a corrected copy, but I don’t know what it is.  Can anyone tell me what I have to do to get a copy where the subtitles reflect the original Japanese dialog?

So some time ago my fiancé @auraboo told me that she once found out that one of her music dvds had erased itself. Confusion. Shouldn’t be possible.

Well, now we found out that another one has done it. We tried putting it in her laptop to play it - computer claimed there was no disc. We tried my computer, which has somehow never had a problem with any discs at all - computer didn’t register that there was a disc.

I’ve googled around, and all I find is stuff about either the reader being broken (which they aren’t) or burned discs eroding over time (but these aren’t burned). Nothing fits. Absolutely nothing.

They’ve been kept in pretty optimal conditions. No light, no moisture, no damage - they’ve been kept in boxes. We’ve doublechecked the discs - no damage anywhere. They SHOULD play. But they don’t. There’s just... nothing there.

We currently have the disc in my fiancé’s old PS2, which has somehow survived. And it’s READING the disc, but hasn’t gotten to the point where we can do anything. It’s been reading the disc for like 15-20 minutes now. Nothing yet.

I don’t understand.

DVD Troubles

Aaaarrrgggh....  I need to vent guys...

I’ve ordered the 1997 Jungle Emperor Leo movie off of Amazon twice now.  Both movies were in good condition.  No scratches and the cases were in good shape too.  The problem, however, is that there is a spot in the movie where it forcefully skips to the next scene.  This happened twice.  IN THE SAME EXACT SPOT.  What are the chances?

I hoped that it was my DVD player so I tested it in many different players.  Same result.  I sent the DVD back the first time and ordered the movie again.  This time I chose a seller that was closer.  Figured that if I chose a different one the chances of having any problems would be slimmer.  It was a bit more costly, but I figured that if I’ll be getting a perfectly functional disc of a movie I enjoyed then it’ll be worth it.  A week later and today I got that DVD.

AND IT DID IT AGAIN!  IN THE SAME SPOT!  I am so mad.  Like, I am actually upset over this.  I am actually feeling so emotionally distressed about this that I am getting the paranoid thought that Amazon had just sent me back that same exact disc!  But that is insane... right?  The sellers were from two different places.  The DVD cases are also different!  The first one’s paper in the case’s cover was a bit scratched up along the edges.  The DVD I got in today had its cover get wrinkle from being in water at some point.  Something that this seller had warned in the text that said that the DVD was in good condition.

It simply astounds me.  That I would have the same problem happen to me twice.  Again, I used different players to see if it was just that one DVD player of mine.  Same results with all of them.  I really do not want to go through the return progress and end up getting a third disc with that same skip showing up.  I am at the stage that I am practically bargaining with my followers for advice.  Maybe this is just my fault?  Maybe I just need to clean the disc?  Not sure exactly how.  Could try looking it up, but I am not sure which would be the best source of information.  My head hurts from the agony of having this dumb skip happen to me twice to really figure out anything properly.  So if any of you have any great advice on this sort of problem, I’ll love to hear it.

I suppose I can lament about the 10 minutes that my discs seem to love skipping.  Only about 3 minutes of that ten are unwatchable.  The rest can be rewound to a certain point.  The part where it skips (on both discs no less) is a major spoiler so if you never watched Jungle Emperor Leo then I advise that you STOP READING NOW.  Got that?  Good.

The skip happens right after Lyra dies from the plague.  The sun sets and the screen goes dark.  The part that is missing is when Leo and Lukio are putting flowers on Lyra’s grave.  Lukio falls ill from the same sickness her mother had and Leo screams at the moon out of frustration of this happening him.  Huh...  I know that feeling of wanting to yell at something, bro.  After that, we are suppose to see Lemonade and Mustache talk about the illness while Ham Egg tells his men about how important it is to climb up Mount Moon.

Thank goodness that the English dub of the movie is on YouTube or I would have never seen what happened.  But I hate the fact that I have to watch the part on YouTube when I have the actual movie in my hands!  It is paradoxically frustrating!  But if you wish to watch the movie without going through the headaches I am going through then click that link up there.

It is the English dub with what I think is Chinese subtitles.  Not 100% sure on that.  I think that as far as dubs go, this one is pretty great.  The script has not been drastically changed and not edits were done to downplay the more graphic elements of the film.  You will also recognize the English voice cast.  Dan Green (Yami Yugi of Yu-Gi-Oh) voices Leo (Kimba for those who remember the old cartoon) and Mike Pollock (Dr. Eggman from the Sonic franchise) voices Dr. Mustache.  You read that correctly.  The voice of Eggman is playing a character who is a doctor with a big, bushy mustache and is named after his appearance.  Except this time he cares about the animals and the environment.  He is, like, the best character.  Well him and Ham Egg (Ted Lewis).  For reasons.  Villain reasons.

Sigh...  I am feeling a little better now after writing this all out.  Again, if there are any suggestions about how to clean the DVD without damaging it than I am all ears.  If nothing works then I’ll need to return the movie again, and hope that third time’s the charm.

But, Yes, I’ve seen the English audio Youtube version, that’s where I first watched it. I didn’t know about the Italian release, shame there is not more subtitle options etc.

Still, we can always hope! I mean, surely someone would think of releasing it one day since it stars young Jennifer Connelly and Labyrinth & Phenomena are popular films : /

Is there a way to exchange or replace DVDs you’ve had for years, but have somehow become damaged or faulty? Because in my Doctor Who rewatch I’ve realized/remembered that a few DVDs from my boxsets are problematic, but I bought them way back in 2006/07/08.

So far I’ve had at least four DVDs where everything just stops working and I have to give certain scenes a wide berth for things to function. Like I had to skip the end of “The Idiot’s Lantern” entirely because something went wrong so badly, and as far as I can remember, I’ve always had to restart my media player and skip ahead a couple minutes in “The Poison Sky” right after they set the atmosphere on fire.

I just really don’t want to have to spend another $30-$60 on each boxset AGAIN.

Amazon said they'd refund automatically (and send a replacement DVD), but instead they refunded and then said I'd have to flat out buy a new DVD.

Come on, Amazon. You were doing so well for me for years.

I contacted Shout! Factory with a picture of my purchase, and they replied that they'd get me a replacement 'one way or another'.

Shout! Factory has been great in regards to customer service, so a big thanks to them. Here's hoping I get my replacement!
