Virgin Islands Dwarf Gecko - The smallest Gecko and what to know!

There wasn’t many resources available to research this specific species, so some information may not be accurate.

Virgin islands dwarf geckos (Sphaerodactylus parthenopion) are the smallest species of gecko found in North America, and is among the smallest of geckos ever discovered! This species likes to spend it’s time in dry/semi-arid areas, such as scrub forests and rocky hillsides in The British Virgin Islands.

This gecko is so small, it is nearly as small as a U.S dime!!!

Due to their small size, it is believed that they struggle to maintain moisture levels in their body, so they hide under moist surfaces. Like many other geckos, if they drop their tails due to stress or fear, they can regenerate it. They store fat in their tails like other geckos to use when there is a lack of food for them.

They are solitary and territorial, other than when it is mating season. This takes place during the peak of the rainy season as it gives their offspring a higher chance to survive the conditions of their habitat.

These dwarf geckos prey on insects and have a carnivorous diet. They are often prayed on by snakes, birds and small mammals, making them a prey species in the vertebrate kingdom.
