ANDROMEDA 2.15. Dance of the Mayflies.
ReWatch: Andromeda - S1, E1
Ep 1: Into the Night This aired 25 years ago, which is hard for my mind to grasp 😝 But watching old scifi is so fun, they tried hard with the effects and monsters, and it's not bad, but it's not like it is today. Let's see how this season holds up. (The final season is pretty bad, and when I was going through the DVDs we had purchased, I let go seasons 2 and 3 of Andromeda, and only kept 1. Although I'm watching it on Peacock because who wants to deal with the DVD player)
I love Harper so much. 😍 Rev Bem, Trance, Rommie, Beka and Tyr. - the originals.
I do appreciate little things, like Harper suffering from some sort of measles which Rommie said was eradicated decades before, Tyr came out of a pod and starts as a gun-for-hire, I mean why not.
Fave dialog: Harper: I'm telling ya, the guy is huge. He's like... some kind of Greek god or something.
Failed Roddenberry Pilots on Tubi
GENESIS II
In 1973, Roddenberry made a pilot called Genesis II. It was about Dylan Hunt (Alex Cord), who gets frozen and wakes in the far future after Armageddon. He finds a group called PAX trying to rebuild civilization. They travel around the country in a futuristic subway. The series was not picked up…
PLANET EARTH
The next year, Roddenberry redid the pilot, this time starring John Saxon as Dylan Hunt. Pretty much the same concept using the same sets. The series was not picked up…
STRANGE NEW WORLD
In 1975, a third attempt was made without Roddenberry. John Saxon was still the star but with a new name. But the plot was similar. But I think they gave up on the underground subway and used a Tesla cyber truck instead. It’s considered the weakest of the three and it was not picked up…
ALL THREE movies/pilots are available on Tubi, a free stream service (with commercials).
ANDROMEDA
In 2000, Majel Roddenberry was involved with another attempt - this one called Andromeda starring future Trump stooge Kevin Sorbo. It ran for 5 seasons. ALL available on Tubi.
John Saxon as Dylan Hunt (Gene Roddenberry's version of Buck Rogers), and Janet Margolin as Harper-Smythe in the television movie Planet Earth (1974).
This was the second pilot for a proposed series from Roddenberry focusing on Hunt, a 20th Century man in suspended animation who awoke in the 22nd Century, and his work with the global peace keeping organization PAX.
The original pilot, Genesis ll (1973), starred Alex Cord as Dylan Hunt, and showed his "origin" story. It was rejected by the television network, so Roddenberry re-worked the concept as Planet Earth. However, unlike with the Star Trek pilots, the second time was not the charm, and the series was never greenlit.
There are some in the fandom who consider Genesis ll and Planet Earth as Star Trek's pre-history, fitting in somewhere between the Eugenics Wars and the creation of the United Planets.
I'm not too far into the Andromeda series thus far, but I love Dylan Hunt's dynamic with Harper and Trance. It gives me eldest brother/father vibes?
I don't like to oversimplify nuanced and unique character dynamics by slapping a label on them, but ya can't tell me these moments don't have that vibe lol
+ wow the custody battle is getting heated
(really, tho, S1E4 is more or less a custody battle set over space battle hijinks)
(screenshots in order: S1E4, S1E6, S1E10, and then S1E4 again)
310 The Unconquerable Man
Gaheris Rhade IS THE CAPTAIN Dylan Hunt COULD NEVER BE!!!
THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE CANON!!!
If Dylan Hunt didn't have extra 800 layers of "main character's fortunate", he would end up failure all over again
And since every major plot lines happened exactly the same, Rhade did his best in facing these more realistic version of "Journey To Restore The CommonWealth"
Even in the end we could see this whole episode is just to "bestow Dylan a reason to be God", Rhade still rocks
——————————————————————
Also Can y'all characters stop saying Rhade is a traitor because he killed his best friend??
He is the Dogs Of War, a Victim Of Circumstances
He didn't betray Dylan to "betray him", he did because he's loyal to his people, he believed his people can form an empire & become "The Better CommonWealth".
IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE PERSONAL BECAUSE IT NEVER WAS PERSONAL!!!!!
IT'S DYLAN WHO MAKE IT PERSONAL ALL THE TIME
——————————————————————
Also did anyone notice how Rhade reluctantly letting Beka leave, that's why Rhade's the BETTER Captain:
because relationship or not, Dylan would never let Beka go just hearing her questioning why did things have to be, just as he wouldn't let Rommie leave because he don't regard them as equal being
Dylan would just cheat and lie to ask Beka stay with his every best intentions
——————————————————————
What pissed me most is to suggest "there's only him can be the one best suited for the mission where everyone else had to pave their ways even sacrifice themselves to achieve so-called "perfect future"
pardon my french but that's just..... literally...... the definition of CULT
Also why does Dylan get to be "the one" just because Rhade failed in this timeline?
And when Trance said "history will judge Dylan with silence" in responding to Rhade saying "history will judge me as a traitor", that's just disgusting
——————————————————————
All in all, the whole "one man's hero is another man's villain" part which I think should have been a common sense since DS9, with examples of Dukat
though I don't even find Dukat worth this praise, and I certainly don't find Rhade as awful as Dukat
so why do Dylan get to say this to Rhade? So unfitted & condescending & righteous
It is admittedly low on his list of sins, but I will never forgive Kevin Sorbo for derailing the story arc on Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda by being an egomaniacal douchebag.
