Apologies for not posting recently! I’ve just been so busy with coursework and haven’t had internet at home till last Friday.
I just wanted to say in case I already haven’t that I finally got into vet school! It’s been such a big change for me but I feel I am prepared. It was a shock the first week as I was extremely ill with “fresher’s flu” (which actually isn’t a flu at all and just a really bad cold?). But then second week came in and things got better.
I also got tested for learning differences and it turns out that I have an IQ of 130 on the Wechsler scale (which apparently is the top two percentile) :O , and I was diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD. Aparently its common to have a high IQ with these problems which surpised me because I had many years of my life with adults I looked up to telling me I wasnt smart enough to acheieve my goals.
I had previously been diagnosed with dyslexia alone and was told I had a “minor focusing problem” so this new diagnoses was a bit of a shock for me. All the comments ever made to me about not being smart, about not ever going to be as good at science or maths as my friends and classmates came into my mind and I just felt defeated. I must admit I was terrified that my UNI would chuck me out thinking I wasn’t good enough or able to handle the course. But, when they found out, they seemed more than amazed at my results and offered me extra time in my examinations along with me being able to apply for a disabled student’s allowance (DSA) with which I can apply for things that can help me to study better. I’m not entirely sure what those things might be, but I think at some point I will be shown a few different choices of things that may prove useful in my studies.
So for anyone who has a learning difference or suspects they have one. Please don’t surpress your feelings about it and try to hide it because you are worried about not getting into Uni as I did. I wish someone had told me that this wouldn’t be held against me by the UNI itself. There will always be some people (mainly other students) who complain about those who get extra time, laptops, scribes, or walk around breaks; don’t take notice of them. Unfortunately, they don’t understand that it’s those things that will help you to keep up with those who don’t have learning differences. I encourage anyone who thinks they are “stupid” because they have trouble understanding or “lazy” because you get distracted or any other comments you feel are unearned from teachers or peers, to get yourself tested and find what aid is out there for you. It doesn’t matter how old you are. I’m 21 and other mature students get tested too. But the earlier the better for you!
I hope everyone had an amazing Halloween!
