I really want to do well this semester. I hope i will.
So today I had to sit some parents down with their child to talk about his work, and they told me he's just been diagnosed with ADHD.
Me: so will he be taking medication?
Parents: oh no, the psychiatrist suggests that it's best for him to decide if he wants to take it
I can visibly see the parents kinda tensing their shoulders here and I had to check my own immediate reaction, because the boy is a handful and I wish he'd settle down faster, but then I remember what it's like to be a kid and have big decisions made for me, and the stuff about children having the right to make some decisions for themselves esp if it will affect them hugely.
Me: yeah of course, it's his body
Parents: *visibly relax*
Anyway, thanks to everyone who has talked about bodily autonomy and child rights, I definitely took the lessons to heart.
Also if you have resources that are helpful for ADHD learners please link them, the kid has real trouble writing legibly and he rushes through written work
advice for students with adhd living on their own for the first time
have ONE fork. you may have two spoons of different sizes if you must, but no more. you may have a couple knives of various purposes, but only ONE of each. you may also have a ladle if you need and other cooking things. but cutlery? ONE of each. or else it will pile up!! it WILL. i promise. guests can fend for themselves, we don’t care about them. forget them. this is about You
same goes for cups and bowls. i don’t even have bowls. i have ONE huge cup. that’s it. i also have a plate. that is all you need.
put a huge whiteboard-type floppy calendar on your wall. it may not help and it may become an annoying thing you have to rewrite every month, but for the times it DOES help? it’s worth it. use BRIGHT and BOLD letters for important things. angry scratchy red letters for deadlines, for example.
put a sticky note on the side of your laptop screen (sticking over the end) that says “LOCK IN” or “FOCUS” or something similar. move its position to another spot on the laptop as soon as it stops being helpful. novelty wears off fast and these things start blending into the background.
put EVERYTHING on your phone calendar. make sure you get multiple alerts starting at least a day in advance
keep your work station clear. move your shit off your work station as soon as you start noticing clutter. you gotta force yourself into that cleaning mode when you see it piling up, or it’s gonna get overwhelming FAST
go outside every day!!! sit outside for at least 10 minutes with no stimulation. just observe the outdoors, stare up at the trees and the sky. do not take your phone! do not take a book or a sketchpad or anything! NO stimulation ‼️ the more bored you are the better. just observe and enjoy it, keep your thoughts in the moment as well as you can
hang a hamper on your door or in some other out of the way but super accessible place. DO NOT HAVE ANY LAUNDRY BINS IN THE OPEN. you WILL start piling your dirty laundry into the place clean laundry is supposed to go instead of the hamper and things will be in too many places at once. have ONE hamper and keep your clean laundry bin(s) tucked away
limit open surfaces like chairs and benches and boxes. you will pile clothes on them. it will be inconvenient and annoying. try to keep the number of such items low
put things away the MOMENT you are done using them. DO NOT LET THEM LEAVE YOUR HAND. once you do it’s over. put those things Somewhere Away.
have multiple little garbage bins tucked away in all the places trash clutter gathers. put the trash there instead of on your desk or floor or table
if you body double with friends, put a ban on yapping. do NOT allow yapping while body doubling or else it’s so over
i will keep adding more as i think of them. hope this helps somebody

3.22.2025 / talking about differences
what works for you might not work for everyone and what works for everyone might not work for you
"studying in bed is bad for your sleep health" - sure but if it's the only way you can study on a bad day where you can barely get out of bed? better than nothing
"you should always handwrite your notes, it improves comprehension" - it absolutely does but i cant write more than a few sentences without losing feeling in my fingers, so typing is the better option for me
"you should do xyz to study, it really works" - things that work for one person might not work for you, its worth a shot but if it doesnt work, don't keep forcing it
i feel like this is something really important to realize for mentally ill, disabled, and neurodivergent people especially. what works for everyone might not work for you.
a personal story, for years i had people tell me to do things x way and a few months ago my therapist was like... "well just try studying in bed and see if it goes okay, because you cant study sitting up for long periods" (chronic pain) and it literally changed my world. i can study in bed just fine. sure it might not be ideal for everyone, but for me, it helps a lot and lets me be able to study more and do more things i enjoy, even if i'm doing them in an atypical manner!
embroidery keeps my brain from catching fire during lectures. it must look funny with my kit and everything in front of me but that way i manage to sit through the whole thing

adhd is being under stimulated, crying because you hate yourself, then realizing that you actually don’t and you just needed a sweet treat
Me back when I was a college student with ADHD (at least I still succeeded) 🥲
