“RED BULL SOAPBOX RACE”
by Dytch66
Since the inaugural event in Brussels in 2000 Red Bull has organized more than 100 soapbox races around the world, awarding winners not just on the basis of speed but also the creativity of the entry—the more outrageous the better. Now held all over the globe from Australia to Jamaica to Finland, the race first came to Los Angeles in 2011 and is now scheduled to return to Elysian Park in August, 2017. As the June entry deadline rapidly approached, Red Bull—which also has a tremendous reputation for their support of street art—partnered with Gabba Gallery and graffiti legend Robert Gomez, aka Dytch66 was asked to paint this creative race entry at Beverly Blvd. and Reno Street. Dytch is well known as a pioneer in 3D lettering and his graffiti background continues to influence his work, but as his interests and styles have expanded he is extending his reach in the world of muralism through his company Blank Canvas LA. @dytch66 @gabbagallery @redbull

“BIRTH OF THE PHOENIX”
by Dytch66
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Robert Gomez, aka Dytch66, was a pioneer of 3D graffiti lettering and is one of the leading artists to emerge from the graffiti culture of the '80s. Dytch says graffiti "was the voice of the people; one in which you could see expressions of all art forms" and it allowed him to share the influences of his Native American and Spanish heritage with the city. Driven to pursue other mediums and define his own visual vocabulary he says his work as a muralist now focuses on the "intersection between photo-realism, color theory, spatial analysis and abstract art." That same drive to explore and pioneer led Dytch to found outdoor media firm Blank Canvas LA, blurring the line between art and advertising. This 2014 wall for the back of the Blick art store at Beverly Blvd. and Poinsetta Pl. showcases Dytch's diverse mix of skills. @dytch66 @blickonbeverly @blankcanvasla
