Mag 33 - Boatswain’s call

Carlita Sloane, 02.01.11, The Atlantic ocean 

Carlita Sloane had been working on a boat whose journey was suddenly cancelled due to “cargo irregularities”, meaning that she was stranded in Porto do Itoqui and needed to find a new job to get her back to England. She mentions that she has a tough time finding work at times in her career because she’s a woman. She was relieved to find a British ship - The Tundra, was docked in the port.

She found the captain, Peter Lukas, completely alone in a bar and sat down opposite him. His unwavering attention unnerved her, and she looked up to see the entire bar empty. She pitched her case, and after a few minutes of silence he told her to report to the dock at dawn.

She met with Tadeas Dahl, first mate of the ship, who brought her on as a regular sailor to her dismay. He carried an antique boatswain’s whistle around his neck. At first, life on the ship seemed normal, but she began to notice some unnerving occurrences. The crew were incredibly quiet and went out of their way to avoid interacting with each other. The only person who’d speak was Tadeas, and Captain Lukas was nowhere to be seen - Tadeas brought all his meals to him separately.

She noticed one of her bunkmates, Sean Kelly, began to look scared. She eventually also noticed that the cargo containers on the ship had rusted together, and examining further - that they were completely empty. Fearing she would be caught, she hid the broken lock from the container she broke into, and ran into the firstmate and half a dozen crew members behind him. Confused, she followed them as they collected every crew member aboard the tundra and put them all in lifeboats. They rowed away from the ship. The wind was dead, and all the lights on the ship were out. She noticed that Sean Kelly was missing, but as she was about to speak, the firstmate glared her into silence. He blew his boatswain’s whistle. A thick fog rolled in, and she noticed a few of her shipmates crying. Sean Kelly was gone upon their return, everyone’s spirits suddenly came alive as people drank and socialised - seemingly celebrating. Carlita tried to ask where Sean was, but was told to shut up and be grateful by Kim Wuong - the third mate.

She returned home, and was paid 25,000 pounds for only two weeks of work.

Notes: The episode begins with Tim approaching Jon about several mistakes he made in his recordings - wrong dates, casefile names, etc. Jon is offended and is reluctant to re-record the statements. Jon mentions that the tundra is owned by Solus Shipping PLC, which is owned by Nathaniel Lukas. He also notes that the Lukas family funnels some of its considerable funds into the institute, and therefore Elias doesn’t like researchers poking their nose into Lukas family business. The crew ledger and cargo records remained the same for ten years on the ship. Sean Kelly’s body washed up in Morocco in 2011. Sean Kelly shares the last name of the family from MAG 21 - Freefall.

Mag 13 - Alone

Naomi Herne, 13.01.2016, Wormshill, Kent.

Naomi first discusses her preferences for being alone for most of her life. All of her relationships had ended one way or another because she just preferred her own company, and she never had many friends to speak of. This changed when she met her recently deceased fiancee, Evan Lukas. She became sociable, and no longer preferred being alone. 

When he died in March 2015, she regressed to being alone. She tried to attend his funeral, but found his family (who she had never met) cold and distant. She gazed as Evan - who had taken the same hardness as his family in death. Eventually, an old man stepped forward and told her to leave, as this was a family affair. Distraught and unable to reply, she left, crashing her car at 12:11pm (six hours after arriving at the house). 

A thick, malicious fog gathered around her as she left the wreckage. Eventually she found herself in a graveyard, and a chapel. She shouted for help, and noticed the grave nearest to her was open as if waiting for her. The fog tried to drag her into it, but she managed to claw her way out of it. 

Inside the chapel she saw the same field she currently stood in, but with moonlight in it. She knew she had to make a choice, and fled the chapel. She heard Evan’s voice telling her to turn left, and is hit by a car. She later woke up in hospital. 

Notes: Naomi has with her a small piece of carved granite from a gravestone which cannot be traced. It reads “forgotten”. Likely the lonely either has a close relation with or is the opposite of the buried - death being a driving force for grief and loneliness but also being smothering. A graveyard is inherently full of other dead individuals - so inherently is something opposite to being alone. This juxtaposition is super interesting - especially going back to the dude from MAG2 and how he managed to avoid the allure of the buried.
