College parties were loud, sweaty, and smelled like cheap perfume and regret.
Which is exactly why Pup didn’t belong in one.
Pup stood just outside the sorority house, shifting their weight from one foot to the other, tugging at the sleeves of their hoodie like it might suddenly turn into a cloak of invisibility.
“Relax,”
Y/n said, adjusting her glasses.
“You look fine.”
“I look like I accidentally wandered into the wrong movie, I’m dressed for High school Musical and this is Project x,”
Pup muttered.
Lara swung the front door open before Pup could spiral further.
“BABE You made it!”
she yelled, immediately throwing her arms around Y/n.
Y/n hugged her back, smiling like the sun had personally chosen her as its favorite human.
“You said if I didn’t come you wouldn’t let me eat y-”
Lara slapped her hand over Y/n’s mouth to cut her off.
Her then eyes slid to Pup, bright and curious.
“And this must be the friend.”
Pup panicked.
“Hi. Hello”
“Cute, Come in before Sophia starts another speech about responsible drinking that no one listens to.”
Lara grabbed both of their arms and pulled them in
Pup’s attention immediately fell onto her.
Sophia Laforteza.
President of the sorority. Effortlessly hot. The kind of girl who looked good in anything.
Pup’s crush.
Pup’s hopeless, definitely not gonna happen crush.
Inside, the house was chaos. Music thumped through the walls, someone was dancing on a table (Megan), someone was yelling about losing a shoe (Manon), and someone else was aggressively pouring drinks like they were mad at the cups (Daniela).
And then Pup saw her.
Sophia stood near the kitchen island, laughing, actually laughing, head thrown back, hand resting lightly on Yoonchae’s shoulder. She looked like she belonged there. Like the party existed because she allowed it to.
Pup swallowed.
“Wow, she’s so….”
Pup whispered in awe
Y/n grinned.
“Oh yeah. That’s her.”
Lara clapped her hands.
“Sophia!”
Sophia turned, smile already on her face, walk past Lara and hugs Y/n.
“Y/n!”
“Rude, I wanna introduce you to someone.”
Lara said
Sophia stepped back after hugging Y/n, eyes flicking briefly to Pup.
“This is… um…”
Lara paused.
Pup waved awkwardly.
“Hi.”
Sophia smiled politely.
“Hey! Thanks for coming. Drinks are on the left, bathroom’s upstairs, don’t trust Megan if she offers you shots.”
Megan yelled from across the room,
“HEY!”
Sophia laughed and was already turning back to someone else.
“I’ll be right back, Lara, Manon is about to start a fire.”
And just like that…she was gone.
Pup stood there, blinking, still in shock that Sophia had spoken to her.
Lara shot Y/n a look.
Y/n sighed.
“Give her a second. She’s in hostess mode.”
Pup nodded, even though their soul had just left their body.
Pup tried again later.
Sophia was pouring herself a drink when Pup approached.
“Uh—hi,I’m—”
“Y/n’s friend!, I remember from earlier”
Sophia smiled at Pup.
“Sophia!”
Daniela yelled.
“Megan stole my cup!”
“I did NOT—”
Sophia groaned.
“I swear I live with toddlers.”
She looked back at Pup.
“Sorry, did you need something?”
Pup could only shake her head no, still in awe of Sophia.
Sophia smiled again, kind but distracted.
“Well, enjoy the party!”
And then she walked away.
Again.
Pup retreated to the wall, watching her from a distance. She talked to everyone. Checked on people. Laughed, listened, cared.
She was warm.
And Pup was just another guest at her Party.
Y/n appeared beside Pup, holding two cups of punch.
“Okay. I’ve seen enough.”
Pup accepted the cup.
“Huh…?”
“Maybe we should just go bro”
Y/n suggest.
“She’s busy.”
“Did you try and talk to her?”
Pup winced.
“Y-yes I did!, but them she was called away.”
Y/n nudged Pup.
“C’mon. Let’s go. We’ll play D&D. I’ll let you use the broken dice.”
Pup laughed softly.
“Deal but let me stare at her more before I leave”
Pup said trying to tiptoe to see Sophia over the crowd, Y/n rolled her eyes and dragged pup out the house.
As they walked out, Pup took one last look back.
Sophia was smiling again, that was enough to make her giddy.
Inside, five minutes later, Sophia leaned against the counter beside Lara.
“Hey… random question.”
Lara raised a brow.
“Dangerous start.”
Sophia rolled her eyes
“Where’d Y/n go?”
“Oh, she left.”
Sophia frowned.
“Already? What about her cute friend.?”
Lara froze.
“…Cute friend?”
“Yeah,”
Sophia said casually.
“The one with the hoodie. Kinda awkward. Sweet vibe.”
Lara’s eyes widened.
“Oh my god.”
“What?”
Sophia asked.
“That was them.”
Sophia blinked.
“Them who?”
“That was the loser, well your loser, the one we wanted to set you up with”
The smile slid right off Sophia’s face.
“Bro…What.”
Lara cringed.
“Remember the one we told you about. The nerd. The one you said you wanted to date instead of frat boys.”
Sophia’s brain short-circuited.
“That was…..That was…”
she pointed at the door.
“Yes.”
“Oh my god.”
Sophia straightened instantly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried! You ran off to stop Megan from eating glitter!”
“FUCK”
A couple heads had turned to witness Sophia’s mini crash out.
Then she bolted.
“Wait, Sophia!”
Lara yelled.
Sophia flew down the steps, pushing past people.
“MOVE BITCH, SORRY, OH MY GAWD GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY PEOPLE, SORRY”
She burst outside.
Empty sidewalk.
No hoodie. No loser. No Pup.
Sophia stood there, breathless, staring into nothing.
“FUCK”
Somewhere across campus, Pup rolled dice on a dorm room floor, completely unaware that the sorority president was officially, tragically, and irreversibly down bad for them.
———
Sophia Laforteza did not chase.
She especially did not chase girls who wore mismatched socks, carried a Pikachu pencil case, and had once tripped over absolutely nothing in front of the library steps.
But here she was.
At 8:07 a.m.
Outside Intro to Psych. Pretending to scroll on her phone. She didn’t even take Intro to Psych.
Across the quad, Pup walked by completely unaware of the fact that she was being watched like a hawk.
Oversized hoodie. Messy hair. Backpack half unzipped. Laughing at something Y/n had just said.
Last week at the party, Sophia had been hosting, running around making sure Manon didn’t set anything on fire, Megan wasn’t arguing about something in the kitchen, Daniela hadn’t taken over the aux, and Yoonchae wasn’t telling some random frat guy off.
She didn’t even think about it then, she was so busy. Which is why now, a week later, she was strategically positioned outside a class she did not attend.
Yoonchae had provided the intel.
“They got Psych on Mondays and Wednesdays at eight. Literature at eleven. Usually studies at the library around four. Eats lunch at weird hours.”
Sophia blinked.
“Why do you know that?”
Yoonchae shrugged.
“I observe.”
Of course she did.
Across the quad, Y/n spotted Sophia first. Y/n nudged Pup.
“Don’t look obvious,”
Y/n muttered. Pup immediately looked obvious and turned their whole body. Sophia panicked and pretended to cough.
“Is that…?”
Pup squinted.
“Wait. Wow, Its Sophia”
Y/n tried not to smile.
“Yeah.”
“She looks like she’s waiting for someone.”
“She is.”
Pup gasped.
“Oh my god, do you think she’s dating someone from my classes?”
Y/n gave Pup a ‘really bruh?’ Look
“No.”
Sophia risked a glance. Their eyes met. For half a second, the world did that slow motion, cinematic thing and then Pup tripped on the edge of the sidewalk.
Sophia’s heart stopped.
Pup windmilled their arms, Y/n barely catching them. Sophia took one step forward instinctively. But Pup just laughed.
“I’m fine!”
they told Y/n.
Sophia’s lips twitched.
God.
Lara had been right.
Pup was cute.
Pup turned back to Y/n.
“Anyway, what were we saying?”
Y/n was grinning now.
“You were saying you’re not nervous about meeting her again.”
Pup scoffed.
“Why would I be nervous? She probably doesn’t even remember me. I was just another loser at her party.”
Across the quad, Sophia felt personally attacked.
She had replayed that five second introduction in her head like twelve times. Pup adjusted their backpack.
“Besides, she’s way out of my league.”
Pup added.
Sophia’s stomach flipped.
Y/n tilted their head.
“You don’t believe in leagues, the only league you believe in is League of Legends”
Sophia had no clue what that was, but she was gonna figure it out.
“I don’t, but she is like, so cool and pretty, and well put together, My socks aren’t even identical, and yesterday I cried when the vending machine ate my dollar”
“Hey!, I cried too, I gave you that dollar”
Y/n defended. Sophia was smiling now and before she could overthink it, before she could let pride win, she walked over.Every step felt louder than it should.
Y/n noticed first.
“Good morning, Soph,”
Y/n said, way too innocently.
Pup froze. Slowly. Very slowly. They turned around. Up close, Sophia noticed tiny details she hadn’t seen before. A constellation sticker on Pup’s phone case. Ink smudges on their fingers. Nervous energy vibrating just under their skin.
“Hi,”
Sophia said.
Smooth. Calm. Controlled.
Pup blinked twice.
“Hi.”
Beat.
Silence.
Y/n looked between them like a proud parent at a kindergarten recital. Sophia cleared her throat.
“I, um… realized we didn’t actually get to talk last week.”
Pup nodded quickly.
“Yeah! Totally. You were busy. Like. Extremely busy. You were kind of… glowing.”
Sophia almost laughed.
“Glowing?”
Pup didn’t say anything, just smiled and nodded.
That was new.
No one had ever described her like that.
Y/n subtly stepped back.
“I just remembered I have… something…..with…. Lara! Yes Lara”
“You don’t-”
Pup started.
Too late.
Y/n was gone.
Traitor.
Sophia shifted her weight.
“I was wondering, if you’d want to maybe grab coffee sometime. When I’m not hosting a chaotic sorority party.”
she said carefully,
Pup’s brain shortcircuited.
“With me?”
Sophia bit her lip.
“Do you see someone else standing here?”
Pup looked around.
“No, I just, I assumed you were……is this like Charity or something?”
Sophia laughed.
Actually laughed.
And it was warm.
“No. Not Charity, I genuinely wanted to grab coffee with you.”
Pup swallowed.
“Oh.”
A slow smile spread across their face.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’d like that.”
Sophia felt something settle in her chest. Victory,But softer.
“Good, when are you free?”
Sophia asked as if she didn’t already know you schedule.
Pup immediately launched into their entire weekly schedule in painful detail.
“Okay so Mondays I have Psych, then Lit, then I usually sit in the library but not like studying studying, more like thinking about studying, and Tuesdays I-”
Sophia just watched them. Completely oblivious. Completely sincere. Completely unaware that the most wanted girl on campus had just spent a week memorizing their routine. And somehow that made Sophia like them even more.
“Thursday, after your four o’clock study session.”
Sophia interrupted gently.
Pup blinked.
“How did you-”
Sophia smiled sweetly.
“I observe.”
Across campus, Yoonchae would have been proud. Pup stared at her for a second longer. Then grinned.
“Okay. Thursday.”
And as Sophia walked away, she felt lighter than she had in months, behind her, Pup turned to no one in particular and whispered:
“Oh my god.”
From across the quad, Lara appeared beside Y/n.
“Well?”
Lara asked.
Y/n smirked.
“Sophia just asked them out….I think”
Lara grinned.
“After that crash out she had last week, i would hope she asked them out”
“What crashout?”
Y/n asked
“I’ll tell you later baby, for now, how about we go back to your dorm and have a little fun?”
“OU lets build an EXP farm on Minecraft”
Lara sighed and kissed Y/n
“Okay baby”
____
Sophia was fifteen minutes early. Which, for her, was embarrassing. She had picked the café across campus, neutral territory. Not sorority row. Not the library. Somewhere calm. Intentional. She checked the door every time it opened.
Not that she cared. She absolutely did not care. Okay maybe she did, she was all nervous and giddy inside.
Five minutes past four.
Ten minutes past four.
Her jaw tightened.
She had been treated like this by so many frat guys before, she didn’t thinking someone like pup would do this too, maybe the problem is herself.
By 4:18, she was staring at her untouched drink, pride starting to itch under her skin. She didn’t have Pup’s number. Which suddenly felt like a strategic failure. She exhaled sharply, grabbed her bag, and stood up.
Fine.
If Pup wasn’t coming, then
“Sophia!”
She turned. There they were. Running toward her from across the quad like a disaster in motion. Hair messy. Backpack bouncing. Papers clutched to their chest like they were fleeing a burning building.
Sophia blinked.
Pup skidded to a stop in front of her, slightly out of breath.
“You’re still here. Oh thank God.”
Sophia raised one perfectly shaped brow.
“Should I not be?”
“No! I mean- yes! I mean-”
Pup squeezed their eyes shut for a second.
“I forgot I had a group project meeting at four and I didn’t realize until ten minutes ago and I panicked and I didn’t have your number and I didn’t know how to tell you and I swear I wasn’t trying to ditch you.”
They finally inhaled.
Sophia just…stared at them. Not angry. Not even really upset. Just watching.
“You ran here,”
she said slowly.
“Yes.”
“You could’ve just… not shown up.”
Pup looked horrified.
“I would never do that.”
And they meant it. Sophia could see it in their face, the genuine distress, the guilt, the need to make sure she didn’t think badly of them.It softened something in her instantly.
“You don’t have my number?”
Sophia asked lightly.
Pup blinked.
“You never gave it to me.”
“That sounds like your fault.”
“My fault?!”
“You’re the one who asked me out”
“I-I did not ask you out, I could never, i would probably puke and die”
Pup protested. Sophia smiled at that.
“You had Y/n introduce us.”
“Nuh uh, Lara pulled me to you”
Sophia laughed despite herself. God. She stepped a little closer.
“So,”
Sophia lowering her voice slightly,
“this project. More important than coffee with me?”
Pup’s brain immediately overheated.
“It’s not more important. It’s just more… academically threatening.”
Sophia bit back a smile.
“And if you don’t go?”
“I fail. And then I spiral. And then I drop out and live in the woods.”
“That escalated quickly.”
Pup nodded gravely.
“It usually does.”
Silence hung between them for a second. Sophia studied their face.
“You really forgot?”
she asked, softer now.
Pup nodded immediately.
“I’ve been thinking about today all week. I just didn’t write it down and my brain is unreliable.”
That confession hit harder than Sophia expected.
“You were thinking about it?”
She asked carefully.Pup froze.
Realized what they said.
“Yes,”
Sophia’s heart did that annoying flip again. She crossed her arms, pretending she wasn’t melting.
“Alright, Go save your group from academic doom.”
She said.
Relief flooded Pup’s face, but so did hesitation.
“To be fair, I’m literally the ‘doom’ in this situation and….I’ll make it up to you,”
“Oh?”
“Yes”
Sophia tilted her head.
“And when would that be?”
Pup opened their mouth. Closed it.
“…I need to check my planner.”
Sophia laughed.
“You are unbelievable.”
Pup shifted awkwardly.
“I’m really sorry.”
This time Sophia stepped closer, close enough that Pup had to slightly turn her head away, fearing they would simply pass out from Sophia being that close.
“It’s okay, But next time?”
“Next time?”
“Get my number.”
Pup blinked.
“…Can I?”
Sophia held out her hand. Pup scrambled to pull out their phone, nearly dropping it in the process. Sophia watched, amused, as Pup typed in her contact like it was sacred text.
“There, you exist in my phone now.”
Pup said breathlessly.
“Congratulations, You’ve upgraded.”
Sophia replied smoothly.
Pup just stared at her again. That look. That soft, awestruck, slightly overwhelmed stare. Sophia leaned in just a little and pressed a quick but soft kiss to pup cheek.
“Go, Before I make you late on purpose.”
Sophia Whispered
Pup swallowed hard.
“Okay.”
They backed up slowly. Still staring. Then turned and jogged away toward their building. Sophia watched them go and instead of feeling stood up she felt wanted because Pup hadn’t ghosted her like all the other guys.
————
Pup had been busy. Like… genuinely busy. Group project. Quiz. Another group project because apparently professors collaborated with the devil. They hadn’t even had their usual Friday night game night with Y/n.
That’s how you knew it was bad. Y/n understood.
“You’re drowning academically,It’s fine.”
Y/n said over FaceTime, eating cereal at 10 p.m. alone. But Sophia?
Sophia did not understand because Sophia Laforteza was used to being pursued. Even now, she still got asked out. Still got cornered at mixers. Still got random “Hey, you single?” DMs.
But not from Pup. Pup, who she was actually interested in. Pup, who had not texted first once this week. Pup, who had replied, yes, but always between assignments. Always distracted.
Sophia tried not to let it bother her.
It did.
Saturday afternoon.
The sorority house was quiet. Megan was out. Manon had practice. Daniela and Yoonchae were grocery shopping. Lara had gone on a date with Y/n
Sophia was home. Alone
In an oversized tee and biker shorts, hair down, halfway through reorganizing the living room bookshelf when the doorbell rang.
She wasn’t expecting anyone. She opened the door and there stood Pup. Holding two coffees like a peace offering.
“Sophia.”
Sophia blinked. Pup looked slightly windblown. Determined. Nervous.
“I come bearing caffeine and guilt,”
Sophia’s face softened instantly.
“You came here?”
“Yes.”
“On purpose?”
“Yes.”
Sophia smiled. Not the polite smile she had to fake at important events. The real one.
“Come in.”
Pup stepped inside-
And immediately tripped on the entry rug. Time slowed. Coffee tilted. Pup gasped. Sophia lunged. Too late. Most of the coffee landed directly down the front of Pup’s shirt. Some splashed onto Sophia’s. Silence. Pup looked down at themself. Then at Sophia. Then back down.
“I ruin everything I touch,”
Pup whispered and looked like a puppy who had been kicked, Sophia stared at the spreading stain on Pup’s shirt. Then she laughed. Not mean. Not annoyed.
Just…amused.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“I brought coffee for you and committed assault.”
“It’s fine,Come on.”
Sophia said, still smiling. She took Pup’s wrist gently and led them toward the laundry room, Pup’s brain was no longer operational.
The laundry room was small. Warm. Slightly cramped.
Sophia grabbed a clean towel.
“You’ll need to take that off,”
she said casually.
Pup froze.
“…The shirt?”
“Yes,The shirt.”
“Oh.”
Right, normal. They swallowed and slowly pulled the coffee soaked shirt over their head. Now standing there in a sports bra and jeans, feeling awkward and very aware of their own existence.
Sophia didn’t stare. But she noticed, strong shoulders. Soft lines. A faint coffee streak near their collarbone.
Sophia peeled her own shirt off just as easily. Underneath….a lace bra.
Pup’s brain exited the chat entirely, they immediately looked at the wall.
The ceiling.
The washing machine.
Anywhere but Sophia.
“You don’t have to pretend I’m not here,”
Sophia said lightly.
“I am trying to preserve my sanity.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“You’re blushing.”
“I am overheating, its hot in here”
Sophia laughed softly.
She tossed both shirts into the washer.
“You know, most people would’ve just texted me.”
she said, leaning closer, Pup stared determinedly at the dryer settings.
“I know, but thats such a douche move”
“But you showed up.”
Pup finally glanced at her.
“I’ve been busy, and I didn’t want you thinking I wasn’t interested.”
Sophia’s teasing expression faded slightly.
“You were worried about that?”
“Yes.”
Sophia crossed her arms loosely.
“I thought you weren’t making time because you weren’t sure about me.”
Pup’s head snapped up.
“What? No. I’m extremely sure about you. That’s the problem and to make it worse, this is like a once in a lifetime opportunity ”
Sophia’s heart skipped.
“Oh?”
“Yes. You’re intimidating.”
“I am not.”
“You absolutely are. You’re like….composed. And confident. And I trip over furniture.”
Sophia stepped closer again, now they were only a foot apart.
“I don’t want composed, I want real.”
Sophia said quietly.
Pup blinked.
“You have that, In excess.”
Sophia added.
The tension shifted, less flustered, more warm. Pup finally relaxed enough to lean back against the washer.
“I don’t really know how to do this,”
“Do what?”
“Pursue or date someone like you or anyone at all”
Sophia tilted her head.
“You don’t have to know how to do it, we can take it slow”
“…What?”
“Don’t pursue me like everyone else does, we go at your pace”
Her voice softened.
“Just show up. Like you did today.”
Pup’s expression changed, less overwhelmed, more steady.
“I can do that,”
Sophia smiled.
“I know.”
And then they fell into something softer, they talked about classes about how Sophia hated being reduced to “the Sorority president” all the time and how she hates having to be the host for parties and only does it because she loves the girls, about how Pup once switched majors twice because they couldn’t decide what mattered more.
They laughed.
They teased.
The room didn’t feel small anymore.
It felt private.
Comfortable.
Front door opened .
Lara and Y/n. The two had just come back from a date
“I forgot my hoodie here last week,”
Y/n said, kicking off her shoes.
“Its in the Laundry room baby, I washed it this morning”
Lara said innocently.
Y/n nodded and wandered more into the house. They pushed the laundry room door open and froze.
Pup.
In a sports bra.
Standing very close to Sophia.
Who was in lace.
Y/n’s brain shut down.
“Oh my God”
They immediately covered their eyes and turned around.
“I SAW NOTHING. I’M BLIND. I’M LEAVING.”
They bolted, footsteps thundering up the stairs.
Pup went rigid.
“NO WAIT, ITS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS, IM STILL A VIRGIN”
Sophia blinked.
Then, Lara appeared in the doorway. She didn’t say anything, she just leaned against the frame Smiling. Slow. Mischievous. Knowing.
Sophia met her eyes and Bit her bottom lip slightly, Lara gave her a thumbs up, Then walked away.
Pup buried their face in their hands.
“I can never see Y/n again.”
Sophia laughed softly.
“You absolutely can.”
“No. I’m transferring.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“You’re overreacting.”
“Am I?, how am i gonna face her when I go over next Friday for D&D”
“Yes you are, and I have no idea what that is”
Beat.
“You’re allowed to be here, with me.”
Sophia added gently, as she reached out and touched their shoulder
Pup lowered their hands slowly and met her gaze.
And this time, they didn’t look away.
“So….still a Virgin huh?”
