Death followed its Marias everywhere. It was death that kept Shadow and Maria apart, in every timeline. He, built callously without it, and she–as a counterweight–pursued by it twofold, so that she could never escape. But she no longer would live a sacrificial lamb to be led to the slaughter. No. In every timeline, Maria Robotnik was going to live.

Shadow and Maria have seen through a lot in their immortal lifetimes. A sacrifice and death that tore the two of them apart, to a strange, unanswered miracle that brought the two of them back together and into the present day. But things begin to take an even stranger turn when a time-traveling, multiverse-hopping Maria comes knocking on their front door, with her houndlike attack-dog Shadow in tow. As Shadow, Maria, and their friends begin to uncover this strange Maria's vengeful plot that is devouring multiverses, Shadow and Maria must reckon with the forces that brought the two of them together - and tore them apart - in the first place.
