I'm actually a little scared that E3 looks like it's dying as an organization, more each year.
I don't know if anyone else remembers, but back in the early 2000s, when the controversy surrounding GTA's "hot coffee" mod became public, politicians tried to make laws to censor the hell out the entire videogame industry. They still thought videogames were toys for kids, so when they learned about the "hot coffee" mod, they tried to make it illegal for mature content in games to exist AT ALL.
The videogame industry fought back and won. But I heard that the only reason they were able to stop such censorship laws and advocate for videogames as Art protected by Free Speech, was because the ESRB (or the owners of E3 at the time) had lobbyists persuade lawmakers. The only reason they had the money to have all those effective lobbyists, was because of their profits from E3. E3 exists to fund lobbyists to protect the videogame industry as Art, and fight censorship. If E3 goes away permanently, where will they get the money to afford the lobbyists? Are we looking at the start of a slippery slope into videogame censorship laws????
These are the negative thought spirals of catastrophizing thoughts that I have. o~O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
