Earlier this year, I joined Nicholas Karlin on his U Street Music Hall shoot of The Orwells and Twin Peaks. I'll admit that I was very jealous he was able to shoot that show. It was the type of shoot that I loved to do, despite how dangerous it could be to my camera body/human body. When I heard that Twin Peaks was coming back to DC and that I had the opportunity to shoot it, I was beyond excited. Nicholas came back from that shoot with over 100 photos he was beyond happy with from the bands to the crowd nearly destroying (maybe actually destroying) U Street Music Hall. I was expecting the same sort of insane crowd/musician interaction.
That didn't seem to happen this time around at Rock & Roll Hotel and I was disappointed. Twin Peaks still had a great set that I fully enjoyed but photographing wise, the crowd wasn't the best. Again, I was expecting to have someone crowd surf on top of me, not be able to move around, etc. I have a feeling the crowd was lacking in energy due to it being in the middle of the work week, but I'm not entirely sure. (Eagulls were okay, but I can't comment due to that time I was more caring about the fact that I was hungry more than the fact that I was at a show.)
I shot part of Twin Peaks' show with my D700, flash and switching between a 50mm 1.4 and 35-70 3.3. During Eagulls, they had mainly low red light with a projector so I put my flash away to maintain their integrity of their visual set. All of the images were red in color and turned into black and white images as I exported.
Nicholas shot for himself so you can view his photos on his photo blog. Who shot this show better?
