I was researching some bugs for the first time and I stumbled on this lil fella:
And I remember as a kid I was convinced that this thing was gonna crawl into my ear and poke me while I was sleeping, I would get shivers seeing this bug! They even named it 'earwig' for its ear crawling tendencies.
So I clicked to read the article to see if it was true. And it's superstition! I was lied to! They're named earwigs because their wings resemble an ear when unfolded!!
What a wonderful thing to be named for! They're harmless to us and just eat insects and plants. They even care for their offspring for a whole month until they reach maturity, which is rare for bugs. They will not crawl into your ear!
