Dale dodged the paparazzi in Bourke Street, heading towards an important dinner at Grossi Florentino’s.
Playing with his glass at the table, he looked up and saw her - Helen Norville. He hadn’t seen Helen in a long time, and embraced her in a warm hug.
They couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces. She looked different.
“I mean, I chopped all my hair off,” Helen bounced her ends, and Dale approved.
Dale couldn’t help but admit he was nervous. “I missed you,” he told her.
“Yeah. Me too.” She breathily replied.
He helped Helen to her chair, and congratulated her on the Lockerbie story and her Logie nomination.
“Oh yeah. I mean, I won’t win. But you are. You know that, right?” She said.
Dale didn’t think so. It would surely have to be Kylie Minogue, right?
“No, you’re absolutely going to win.” Helen insisted. “That’s why they’ve asked me to present… unless you think that’s cheesy. I mean, I can say no if you don’t want them…”
Dale saw the sentiment. “No. I actually think that would be quite touching.”
It turned out Helen would be in Australia for longer than the Logies, and she was nearly bursting at the seams to tell him her special news.
“Umm… they’ve offered me my own show!” She beamed with joy. “It’s public affairs. It’s late night, but it’s every weekday.”
Dale was concerned about the lack of promotion, but he could not have been any more thrilled, or proud.
There was a particular question on their minds that they both had for each other.
“Is there anyone?” Dale asked her.
“No.” She shook her head. “I mean, there were a couple of disasters in Washington. And there was a disaster in London too. So far, you remain my only non-disaster.” Helen began to cackle. “And we were pretty disastrous!”
She keeled over the table with laughter, and her face illuminated with light and love.
Dale stared at her, pressing his lips together, seeing the years differently.
“I don’t think we were.”
The light faded from Helen’s eyes at Dale’s earnestness, wondering if they really were that disastrous after all.
