These four watercolors in the Museum’s collection show Georgia O’Keeffe’s early experiments with abstraction. Her work impressed the dealer (and later her husband) Alfred Stieglitz, who launched her career in New York with her first solo show in 1917. O’Keeffe’s lush watercolor is sensitive to light so it isn’t often on view, but you can see it now in Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern at the Brooklyn Museum.

Wassily Kandinsky Improvisation 4. Kandinsky did not paint what he saw, he painted what he heard, using color like sound. Painted in 1909 in Munich, this work shows his move toward abstraction, where blue, red, and yellow create emotion instead of clear forms.
