For those out of the loop, Indivisible is a RPG developped by Lab Zero, an indepedent game studio known previously for Skullgirls, a fighting game that got a decent following thanks to its cast of memorable characters (not exclusively talking abou their “desing” here) and pretty intriguing lore. I REALLY like Skullgirls, so when I came across the free Indivisible prototype on the PS store, I had to download it and play it Let’s get this out of the way, for an unfinished project, I can’t wait to see the finished product. First off, the navigating is directly inspired by the metroid-vania style known from, well, the Metroid franchise and the Symphony of the Night era of Castlevania. This genre of platform games doesn’t get old, it’s always satisfying to find an upgrade that will allow you to get to a new section of a complex labyrinth. One thing that I also like about the navigating is that you can kill enemies on the go without triggering an encounter… Speaking of encounters, the fighting system is also really fun, characters can load slots for their attacks and can use them all at once or they can save them for later, so strategy is key when fighting. You can also block enemy attacks by pressing a corresponding button à la Mario & Luigi RPGs so that the combat stays action-packed. It might be a mess when I explain it (I’m not good for explaining things), but in a nutshell, the combat is action-packed while involving strategy. Next up is presentation. Just like Skullgirls, the 2d sprites are REALLY well animated and the characters really stand out from their designs. You can tell a lot just by looking at your party: a brave female protagonist, a cocky nordic archer, an experienced Indian warrior and, my personnal favorite, a moppy shamaness. One part that is actually surprising are the 3d backgrounds, despite being a bit unpolished (it’s an early build), they blend in so well with the 2d sprites that you kinda forget that the backgrounds are three-dimensionnal. Finally, if you can find it, do try the Indivisible prototype,it is fun and really impressive for an early build. I can’t wait to see the final product and it is now one of my most anticipated game at the moment…
